6 things you probably don’t know about the new MiniMed™ 630G system

MiniMed 630G insulin pump

You might have already heard about the exciting updates made on our new MiniMed™ 630G system, from the remote bolusing option to waterproofing. But when it comes to diabetes tech, sometimes the little things make a big difference. That’s why we listened to the diabetes community and incorporated your feedback throughout the design process.  As a result, here are six features/capabilities that are new in the MiniMed™ 630G system.

  1. Intuitive navigation and a new status bar for easy access to your information

Your home screen now shows the following:

notification

  • Active insulin
  • Any BG reading taken within the last 12 minutes (only when CGM isn’t active, otherwise it shows the latest CGM reading)
  • Bolus and basal options
  1. Customized Basal Patterns

Different insulin needs on sick days or active game days? There are now up to 8 basal patterns which include new settings for Workday, Day Off, and Sick Day. And there are also 8 preset temp basals which include new settings for “High Activity, Moderate Activity, Low Activity, and Sick”.

  1. Preset Bolus Option

Do you eat the same breakfast every morning? You can save a preset bolus so that with a couple of button pushes you can receive the exact dose of insulin that you know you need.

  1. Event Markers and Reminder Options

You can now set various event markers to optimize your diabetes management. Account for blood sugar checks, injections, food and exercise all on your pump. This means that when you’re reviewing your data with your doctor, you can have more context to your discussions. You can also set reminders just like you would on your cell phone. You can set personal reminders or things like a reminder to check your blood sugar, complete a bolus, or change your infusion set.

  1. Optional Airplane Mode

The MiniMed™ 630G system now offers an airplane mode option for air travel. This option prevents the pump from receiving wireless communication from other devices all while still collecting data from your CGM (for up to 10 hours).

  1. Auto-brightness with Color Screen

Since we heard feedback from the community that color screens on other pumps can be difficult to see in daylight, we made sure to include the ability to adjust the screen display brightness. You can even set your pump to auto-brightness which will automatically adjust the screen on your behalf when changing environments.

So which of these are most exciting to you? Let us know in the comments!

Important Safety Information
The MiniMed 530G and 630G systems with SmartGuard technology are intended for the delivery of insulin and continuous glucose (CGM) monitoring for the management of diabetes mellitus in persons 16 years of age or older who require insulin. Insulin infusion pumps and associated components of insulin infusion systems are limited to sale by or on the order of a physician and should only be used under the direction of a healthcare professional familiar with the risks of insulin pump therapy.
The systems are not intended to be used directly for preventing or treating hypoglycemia but to suspend insulin delivery when the user is unable to respond to the Suspend on low alarm and take measures to prevent or treat hypoglycemia themselves. The information provided by CGM systems is intended to supplement, not replace, blood glucose information obtained using a blood glucose meter.
A confirmatory fingerstick via a CONTOUR®NEXT LINK portfolio meter*, is required prior to making adjustments to diabetes therapy. Always check the pump display when using a CONTOUR®NEXT LINK portfolio meter*, to ensure the glucose result shown agrees with the glucose results shown on the meter.  Additional, warnings, precautions and contraindications apply.  See www.medtronicdiabetes.com/support/download-library/user-guides and www.medtronicdiabetes.com/importantsafetyinformation for details. *The CONTOUR®NEXT LINK 2.4 Meter is used with the MiniMed 630G system. The CONTOUR®NEXT LINK Meter is used with the MiniMed 530G system.

Can the 630g be programmed to connect with the OneTouch UltraLink meter? My insurance only pays for OneTouch. The Contour I have to pay a lot more.

Hi Paul - the only meter that will work to transmit blood sugar readings is the CONTOUR NEXT LINK 2.4 meter. When using any other meters you will need to manually enter your blood sugar readings into the pump. The CONTOUR NEXT Reimbursement Support Program provides CONTOUR NEXT Test Strip support if you’re on a compatible Medtronic insulin pump. I inquired about the 630G but was told that I first had to upgrade to the 530G- how are the 630G's being doled out? why do I have to do the 530G first?

Hi Patricia - you do not need to get the MiniMed 530G system before you can get the MiniMed 630G system, but in order to upgrade it does depend on your warranty expiration date. Please give us a call at 800.646.4633, Option 8 if you'd like to speak with someone.

Considering Dumping the use of 630G: I just started using the 630G a week ago. I like the features: High warnings, Low warnings, Bolus and BG interactions, screen, etc. But I would consider going back to the 530 model for one reason.... the forced use of a belt clip. The holster for the 500 series allowed you to keep the clip mechanism where it was (on your belt) but remove the pump quickly for access and use. The 630G belt-clip only option makes it a two hand operation to remove from belt. The 630G requires more interaction, or at least entices interaction, so it will not be convenient, and will be expensive as I know there is going to be belt-clip breakage frequently. Is Minimed going to offer another belt storage device like the Holster ? And no the belt pouch they offer won't cut it for lean people, everyone will be asking "what's around your waist" as the pouch will "pooch". Thanks

Hi Brian, I'm sorry to hear that you're not happy with the belt clip. Please visit our online store to see other options: http://medtronicdiabetes.com/store. You may want to check out the SPIbelt as an option to hold your insulin pump and help to offer something more discreet.

The lack of a holster is a really big deal. It's surprising Minimed doesn't get this. Being able to quickly remove and look at (even give an easy bolus) with one hand while walking, riding a bicycle, driving was huge. Now it's a 2 handed operation that you can't even do while walking.

Holster please! How hard can it be to make one of these and bring it to market?

I just received and have been using the new 630G for 10 days now. The biggest issue I have, and this is a HUGE PROBLEM, is the forced use of the belt clip. I used the holster for my 530G and it was an absolute necessity. With the 630G being larger, the top of the reservoir digs into your side. I'm not overweight but even the smallest of extra weight around the stomach/pant line area makes this very uncomfortable. In addition, as others have posted, the pump is not easy to remove with this current clip. Please go to the manufacturer of the 530G holster and have them create one for the 630G.

I just got the 630g pump and am very disappointed with the shoddy quality of the clip. The paradigm pump clip was much stronger. This clip will not even hold its own weight, if you clip it to the bottom of a T-shirt, it falls off. When I buy a piece of medical equipment that costs thousands of dollars I expect better. The fact that on medtronics customer service line they have an option devoted just to broken clips is telling. Given the fact that I have to take it on and off multiple times a day I feel like this a significant design flaw. If it does not stay attached to my clothing it would rip my infusion site out. Are there plans to improve this in the future or offer a holster that is stronger? If not I may be returning it.

I have a 670G minimed pump, mmt1780. I don't think the breakable clip is so much a problem as the fact that the pump screen is upside down. If I could just clip it to my belt and use it without taking it off, it would be great. However, when it is clipped and I want to read the screen, I either have to unclip it or read it upside down. Is there a way to rotate the screen?

Hi there, Jennie. This is a request we've heard and shared with our team. Unfortunately, there is no way to rotate the screen, but it's certainly something we are looking into for the future.

You have said everything that I’m currently going through. This is a deal breaker for me. I’m heavily contemplating sending it back because of the clip. And no, I will not be wearing a belt instead. So frustrating.

I am also experiencing terrible problems with the belt clip. I just received my new 630G a month ago and the pump has fallen several times, once ripping out my insertion. I ended up having to remove it from the rubber protection case, because the case somehow sticks to my skins and makes the belt clip fail even more so. I am so worried my pump is going to either break or end up in the toilet. I hope that a redesigned pump clip is a priority for Medtronic.

I am hard of hearing and can't hear the audio from the 630G pump. I have the volume adjusted to it's highest setting.
I also can't feel the vibration of the 630G pump. My previous pump had a very physical vibration. It was the Revel version.
Do you have any suggestions how to make either the audio or vibrate modes louder or more physical so I might know when the pump is trying to get my attention?????
Thanks

Does the silicone case (ACC-821BK) have an opening at the top to remove the battery cover and swap batteries like the 530g silicone case? The photo of the case on the Minimed store shows only the front and back of the case, not the top.

Hi Mike, great question! The silicone case for the MiniMed 630G insulin pump does not have an opening for the battery cap. You would need to peel away the skin to change the battery.

It's been mentioned before, but I'd like to add my $0.02 about holster/case options for the 630G (and hopefully for the 670G, too!): for many of us the integrated belt clip that holds the pump vertically on the waist is uncomfortable.

Wearing the pump this way makes bending, sitting, and crouching awkward and uncomfortable because the tubing set jabs you in the gut. This frequent compression against your side also causes the tubing to crease where it meets the cartridge cap and wear prematurely. A nicely made holster designed to hold the pump horizontally along the belt would go a long way in making the user experience more comfortable.

It's the small touches like this that can make a truly good product great. In a professional setting the sport case or neoprene case currently found in the online store just doesn't cut it. I wear my pump on my belt for accessibility reasons, and the only viable option for me is a nicely made form-fitting horizontal holster. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE push this feedback to whomever you can for consideration. The 630G gets great points in my book for features and functionality but scores very low with regards to comfort of carry for someone who needs a simple, attractive, and comfortable solution.

Well, said! My 12 year old son is sadly, disappointed at his new 630G belt clip. As a young pre-teen boy who is on the go and needs things done quickly-- looking down at the time on the screen is so important to him. He is not excited about the upgrade which worries me because of how important this new technology is to his well being. We've had it for a day and he's already complaining. Please make new belt clip options. I can't imagine this same request from all of the above comments can't be fulfilled as soon as possible. My son has a long life of Diabetes ahead of him, I'd like to make it as smooth as possible for him. Thank you.

it's surprising that nowhere on the main Medtronic website is size data offered on pumps. I read above where the 630G is slightly larger than the 530G and heard the same from a helpline employee. I guess because of the orientation change the online pictures make it appear larger than it actually is, and these tidbits of info have me more interested in upgrading than I was originally. But I am concerned about the comments concerning the belt clip. Is this the only way to wear the 630G? Most of the time I just slip the 530G into a pants pocket. Can this still be done?

Submitted by Karrie Hawbaker (not verified) on

In reply to by Jeff (not verified)

Hi Jeff, the main reason for the increase in size over Paradigm is to accommodate the AA battery which is required to properly power the pump and color screen. The overall increase between the 3.0 mL size of pumps is only a 17% volume difference and 5.1 grams heavier with the battery inserted. In regard to the belt clip, you can continue to wear the MiniMed 630G insulin pump the same as your Paradigm pump. The clip can be removed if you’d like to wear another case.

This sort of information is almost always buried somewhere in a user manual, so I took a look in the 630G User Guide and after a bit of looking I found it on p. 259. The dimensions are listed in the "product specifications and safety information" section under the heading "Pump Dimensions."

As of today (12/21/2016), you can Google "630G user manual" and a .pdf version of the User Guide is the first return that pops up.

I'd also like to request more case options. I don't care about the personalization so much as I care about the protection and functionality. A swivel capable case that offers screen protection is what I'm really looking for. Thanks!

When with the rotating belt clip holster become available for the 630G insulin pump?

I recently purchased the new 630G insulin pump and like many of the features, but have encountered a serious problem with air bubbles. Even after clearing all air bubbles from an insulin reservoir, new air bubbles will form in the insulin reservoir when there is a drop in air pressure, or a rise in temperature. For example, after a recent airline flight, a large bubble formed in the insulin reservoir. For this reason I have reluctantly reverted back to using my old Medtronic Paradigm pump.

My old pump uses the same insulin reservoirs as the new 630G pump, but has a clear window that makes bubbles in the insulin reservoir visible. I ask that the next version of this pump have a clear reservoir window. (I've been a pump wearer for years and know to warm insulin to room temperature before loading and wait overnight for dissolved air to come out of solution.)

The old pump can also be used with the rotating belt clip holster. I rotate the pump to the horizontal position so that bubbles do not pass into the tubing. Bubbles in the new 630G pump rise to the top of the reservoir and displace insulin, resulting in a blood sugar rise. They are very hard to see in the tubing. The solution is to wear the pump in a horizontal position, but cases I ordered from Medtronic did not fit this new pump, or they concealed the pump and took two hands to open. When will the rotating belt clip holster become available for the 630G insulin pump?

We encountered a "stuck button" error today, on my wife's 630g. No-one was holding down any button; but although all other buttons felt normal, the center button didn't make the usual clicking feel when pressed. Pretty soon a very loud alarm was sounding; but we couldn't clear it because it was the "enter/OK" button that was stuck, AND because nothing we did would cause the display to turn back on. We called the 800 support line, and after instructing us to remove the battery and then place the pump into storage mode, a warranty replacement is now on it's way. However, that's not the end of the story. We were on a commercial flight, in the process of landing, when all this chaos occurred. While waiting on our connection we pulled out the sensor and the injection site, and THEN noticed the the button was now unstuck! Pondering what had just happened, I came up with a theory that I'm hoping someone here can either substantiate and/or shoot down.

My theory is that it was the pressure change during landing that temporarily caused this problem. The 630g has a new waterproof feature. Could this seal around the unit, including it's buttons, and the rapid drop in altitude, have created enough of a pressure difference to actually compress the center button?

Thanks for reaching out Tim in regard to your feedback on the MiniMed 630G insulin pump. By returning your wife’s insulin pump it will allow us to perform a failure analysis and at that time we can determine what caused the button to stick.

Depending on what I'm wearing sometimes I preferred horizontal and sometimes vertical. Thank you!
