If you live with the help of a medical device, you have at least a few additional hurdles to face in order to live well and accomplish your goals. That’s why it’ so inspiring to see people overcoming these hurdles in both everyday ways and really big ones. To celebrate some of these big accomplishments, every year Medtronic hosts the Global Heroes program. A group of runners from around the world who benefit from medical technology are chosen to come to Minneapolis to run in the Medtronic twin Cities Marathon events. Each of the 25 individuals uses a medical device – from insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors to pacemakers and neurological devices – to manage a health condition. Selected runners receive race entry, travel expenses for themselves and a friend and a $1,000 donation to the charity of their choice.
In the past, the diabetes community has had strong representation from some extraordinary runners, such as Celine Parent, Lindsey Burch, and Lindsay Gossack. With this year’s runners from the diabetes community representing the U.S., Macedonia, Ireland, Portugal, and China, the 2013 Global Heroes line up is no exception!
To learn more about the Global Heroes program and read about this year’s athletes, stop by the Global Heroes webpage or visit the Global Heroes Facebook page to follow the successes of the athletes. If you happen to be in Minnesota, come by the marathon on October 6th to join the Medtronic crew in cheering on these amazing runners!
