Presenting Sponsor for Beyond Type 1: New York City Marathon Team

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be sponsoring the “Beyond Type Run” team at the world-renowned fitness event, the TCS New York City Marathon! Beyond Type 1 has been named an official charity partner of the marathon this year.
Beyond Type 1 has played an important role in the diabetes community focusing on education and empowerment since 2015. We think it’s really inspiring that diabetes will be brought into the spotlight and are incredibly proud to have the opportunity to support Beyond Type Run.
Medtronic will be sponsoring the group of individuals living with T1D who are running to break down stigmas and raise diabetes support. The team consists of a few first-time-marathoners, all the way to team captain, Robin Arzón who will be running for the 23rd time! (WOW!) The team has had diabetes a variety of time, from 3 years to twenty-eight years. Some will even be running with insulin pumps on their hips! This team embodies what we want for all PWD– for each of you to have the ability to chase BIG dreams (whatever they may be) and not allow diabetes to hold you back.
Stay tuned on both the Medtronic and Beyond Type 1 social media channels over the next few months to meet the runners and hear more about their inspiring stories. Race day is on November 5…isn’t this a fantastic way to kick off Diabetes Awareness month?!)
Best of luck to each of the runners. We’ll be cheering for you every step of the way!
Editors note: All 17 runners successfully completed the marathon! We are so inspired by their determination and resiliency. For more, check out these resources:

I loved reading about the partnership between Medtronic and this exciting charity Beyond Type 1! I would love to meet all of the Medtronic sponsored runners at the NY Marathon! I have been a Type I diabetic for 29 years & have worn only Medtronic pumps over the years! Thanks to great practitioners, the Minimed pump & sensors & the love of running I have completed 10 marathons including Boston & soon-to-be NYC!! It is sometimes lonely out there balancing all the extra factors that we diabetics deal with, but we do. We do our best. We do overcome many obstacles.
Please keep me posted how I can meet up w/ all of you!! Would love to hear your stories !! We have so much to share & to inspire the world !!
I am a PhysicianAssistant with Type 1 Diabetes. I am going to be running the Medtronic TwinCities Marathon on October 1. Do you have any similar teams running? I’d love to join!!!! I have had diabetes for 25 years and this will be my second marathon.
Katie, you can connect with Vince who will be running the half-marathon as part of the Medtronic Global Champions: http://www.minimedambassadors.com/vincem. Good luck with the marathon!

I have been a Type I diabetic for 29 years & have worn only Medtronic pumps over the years! Thanks to great practitioners, the Minimed pump & sensors & the love of running I have completed 10 marathons including Boston & soon! Thank you and good luck. Thank you for sharing your article about PRESENTING SPONSOR FOR BEYOND TYPE 1: NEW YORK CITY MARATHON TEAM.
The comments about the runners who are marathon runners inspire me for my son. He will be 16 in two weeks. He has been running in his own for the past 4 years, but this year he has joined the cross country team in HS. He wears the 670g pump. Unfortunately he suffered a severe low and glucagon was needed. The low was caused because of a faulty Mio which we were unaware of. I want to some how reassure the coach, who is a runner himself, he’s run in marathons like you all, that my son can do this. What can I do? My son ran all summer with no problems, 6-8 miles, then this happens after a two mile race. Is there a list of marathon runners with T1, something I can use, practice protocol? Something you all can suggest for my son to follow before and after running? Thanks.
Britt, I’m sorry to hear about his incident, but glad to hear this has been a form of inspiration. If he has another issue, please feel free to contact the 24 hr HelpLine at 800.646.4633. We have a listing of our MiniMed Ambassadors who would be great to connect with. You can search for the best connection here: http://www.minimedambassadors.com/connect.
I would love to hear the prep work that goes into running these with type 1. I have a very difficult time managing my type 1 over the course of a 2-3 hour tennis match and am very interested in what is required to run for so long without going low
Great to see Medtronic involved and supporting a team at the NYC Marathon this year. I’ve had T1D for 35 years and been on a Medtronic pump for the last 18 years. I completed the NYC Marathon in 2014 and have since completed two full Ironmans most recently Ironman Wisconsin in September. I’ve never let T1D stand in the way of any of my dreams and goals. It’s nice to see awareness being raised at a higher level. Best of luck to the team in November!
That is awesome, Gretchen. You are an inspiration to us and the our community as well. Keep up the great work!!
Hi, my name is Christy. Great to hear of the Beyond Type Run support for NYC marathoners. I will be running the Marathon in Phoenix in January. I have had Type 1 diabetes for 41 years! Would love to bring awareness to all T1s. Will there be a team that I can run with in Phoenix?
That’s amazing, Christy! We don’t currently have any affiliation with the marathon in Phoenix, but I will be sure to pass this on to my team. In the meantime, check out our blog post here to learn more about the Beyond Type 1 team and to access their website for more information on upcoming events.
