Meet the newest member of the family: The MiniMed 630G system

MiniMed 630G pump with strawberry and blueberry background

Great news, everyone! Today I’m thrilled to share that the FDA has approved the MiniMedTM 630G system with SmartGuard™ technology. This advanced diabetes system provides better glucose control[i], protective action and personalized management so you can focus less on managing highs and lows and more on what matters most to you –whether that’s time with your loved ones, pursuing a big career goal, traveling the world or all of the above!

What’s so exciting about the MiniMedTM 630G system? Let’s find out.

SmartGuardTM technology

MiniMedTM 630G is a new insulin pump combined with our EnliteTM sensor. The system includes SmartGuardTM, our exclusive technology that takes action to reduce the risk of diabetes complications ii. The system automatically stops delivering insulin when your sensor glucose hits a preset low level and you don’t respond to the alarm. SmartGuardTM is available in both MiniMedTM 630G and MiniMedTM 530G systems (you may recognize this as Threshold Suspend.)

A new, improved pump design

The MiniMedTM 630G system also has a brand new (and improved) pump design with many more personalization options to make the system more convenient and tailored to how you manage your diabetes. You can customize alerts and alarms and we’ve introduced more user-friendly menus. The new system also includes that full-color screen and waterproofing you’ve been asking us for! This new design incorporated extensive patient feedback and user testing from people with diabetes, so we can’t wait to hear what you think.

A new meter

The MiniMedTM 630G system exclusively uses the CONTOUR®NEXT LINK 2.4 Meter to provide highly accurate blood glucose testing and to automatically transmit blood glucose results into the pump to eliminate manual entry errors when using the Bolus Wizard® calculator or calibrating the sensor. It’s similar to the CONTOUR NEXT LINK meter that comes with our MiniMedTM 530G system and is the only meter FDA approved for use with the new system. It also allows you to discreetly give a manual or a pre-set bolus of insulin remotely from the meter – another feature that many of you have told us would be beneficial to you.

Just one more step

Here at Medtronic Diabetes, our vision is to transform diabetes care, together for greater freedom and better health. This new system demonstrates Medtronic’s focus on making diabetes devices more convenient and simple to use as well as delivering better clinical outcomes. We’re certainly not done yet. Innovation is a journey and we’re constantly working on improving the products we have today as well developing new ones. In the meantime, we can’t wait to hear what you think of this latest step to help you live your exceptional life.

Part of a family

The MiniMedTM 630G system joins our family of diabetes management products, including our MiniMedTM 530G system which we will continue to provide. The MiniMedTM 530G system is popular for its ability to be used with MiniMedTM Connect mobile accessory, which allows people with diabetes to discreetly view CGM data on their smartphones as well as remote monitoring for their care partners. So, we’re offering both products to meet the different lifestyle needs of people with diabetes. Like the MiniMedTM 530G system, the MiniMedTM 630G system is approved for people age 16 and older. We expect to start shipping in a few weeks and we’ll be sure to keep our community updated. To learn more about the product in the meantime, visit our website

Important Safety Information
The MiniMed 530G and 630G systems with SmartGuard technology are intended for the delivery of insulin and continuous glucose (CGM) monitoring for the management of diabetes mellitus in persons 16 years of age or older who require insulin. Insulin infusion pumps and associated components of insulin infusion systems are limited to sale by or on the order of a physician and should only be used under the direction of a healthcare professional familiar with the risks of insulin pump therapy.
The systems are not intended to be used directly for preventing or treating hypoglycemia but to suspend insulin delivery when the user is unable to respond to the Suspend on low alarm and take measures to prevent or treat hypoglycemia themselves. The information provided by CGM systems is intended to supplement, not replace, blood glucose information obtained using a blood glucose meter.
WARNING: The Threshold Suspend/Suspend on Low feature will cause the pump to temporarily suspend insulin delivery for two hours when the sensor glucose reaches a set threshold. Under some conditions of use the pump can suspend again resulting in very limited insulin delivery. Prolonged suspension can increase the risk of serious hyperglycemia, ketosis, and ketoacidosis. Before using the Threshold Suspend/Suspend on Low feature, it is important to read the information in the MiniMed System User Guide and discuss proper use of the feature with your healthcare provider.
A confirmatory fingerstick via a CONTOUR®NEXT LINK portfolio meter*, is required prior to making adjustments to diabetes therapy. Always check the pump display when using a CONTOUR®NEXT LINK portfolio meter*, to ensure the glucose result shown agrees with the glucose results shown on the meter.  Additional, warnings, precautions and contraindications apply.  See www.medtronicdiabetes.com/support/download-library/user-guides and www.medtronicdiabetes.com/importantsafetyinformation for details.
*The CONTOUR®NEXT LINK 2.4 Meter is used with the MiniMed 630G system. The CONTOUR®NEXT LINK Meter is used with the MiniMed 530G system.

Edward - we'll have a variety of different programs that will help many customers upgrade to the MiniMed 630G system. They vary by insurance coverage, time since you bought your last pump etc. Visit http://medtronicdiabetes.com/products/minimed-630g-insulin-pump-system and fill out the form to request more information.

Not at all happy at the moment with the 630G system. Have been using it for about one year. 630G recall in January because of no sound issue. Medtronic replaced it with a RECERTIFIED pump. Was not too happy that it wasn't a new pump because this is, afterall, my health depending on a pump. And, at the time, I questioned a RECERTIFIED...where did it come from in the first place that it wasn't new? Over the weekend, 30 days after receiving the RECERTIFIED pump, it COMPLETELY FAILED. No longer usable. Not able to retrieve any information from it. Had to resort back to syringes. So much for the RECERTIFICATION process. While Medtronic did get me a new pump right away, it took 5 phone calls over the course of 5 hours and an entire day WASTED. Not happy with Medtronic's different frequency excuse for not being able to connect to iPhone like 530G did. My 530G was 4 years old, worked like a champ, but they stopped making the transmitter for them so had to change to the 630G. The 670G system was out almost simultaneously with the 630G system. It seems to me Medtronics is attempting to push out product before it's finished just to appear to stay ahead of the game. Medtronic, these are people's lives you are dealing with. Put out a good product, not a piece of trash, just to be able to say you have a new product.

I’m sorry to hear this was you experience, Marie, this certainly the experience we strive for. I’m glad to hear you received a new pump and please know we are working on remote monitoring for our pump systems. The MiniMed 670G system was approved much faster than anticipated and we didn’t want to hold back this technology for a single feature. If you’d like to discuss your concerns in more detail, please email us at dhelp@medtronic.com and we’ll be in touch.

We currently use the connect feature for iPhone viewing and remote monitoring. Will that be available on the new system? Android compatible yet for either system ?

Submitted by Karrie Hawbaker (not verified) on

In reply to by Elizabeth (not verified)

Hi Elizabeth - the MiniMed Connect app is not compatible with MiniMed 630G (MiniMed Connect uses a different radio frequency to communicate with the MiniMed 530G system than the RF frequency that the MiniMed 630G system uses). We will continue to offer both the MiniMed 530G system and the MiniMed 630G system. For those interested in the connectivity benefits of the MiniMed Connect app and its remote monitoring features, we recommend the MiniMed 530G system.

It uses RF.

Will the 630G ever be compatible with the Connect App or something similar? That is a great feature I was hoping would be on the new on, as the waterproof and design have pulled me in that direction already.

Thanks for the feedback, Justin. We’re continuing to work on connectivity for other future products.

WHY does the 630g not have the awesome connect feature for i phones and remote activation for insulin bolus delivery

Submitted by Karrie Hawbaker (not verified) on

In reply to by mary (not verified)

Hi Mary - the MiniMed Connect app uses a different radio frequency (RF) to communicate with the MiniMed 530G system than the RF frequency that the MiniMed 630G system uses. The new system does though allow for remote bolus function from the CONTOUR NEXT LINK 2.4 Meter.

Hi, I am interested does it work with the current Enlite sensors (1st gen) or you will provide us with 2nd or 3rd gen
Regards

In reply to by Peter Slabakov (not verified)

The MiniMed 630G system includes Enlite sensors. The Guardian Link transmitter and the device used to insert the sensors are both new, though. The one-press serter was designed to make it easier/more comfortable to insert - you only need one button press for the entire process.

hi. this looks exciting. why wouldn't you include the mobile connect features in the new pump? and what is the size difference between the 530 and the 630. thank you.

Submitted by Karrie Hawbaker (not verified) on

In reply to by rob (not verified)

Hi Rob, the RF frequency is different from the MiniMed 530G system to the MiniMed 630G system, which is why the MiniMed Connect app is not compatible with the new system. We do plan to integrate connective into future products, though. As for the size, the MiniMed 630G system is about 5.1 grams heavier than previous MiniMed pumps with the battery inserted.

It is nice to know the weight difference, but what are the dimension differences between the 2 models?
And does the 630G use a different belt clip than the 530G, which I imagine it does?
And......
Thanks for answering all these questions that you are handling!!!!

Submitted by Karrie Hawbaker (not verified) on

In reply to by Mike (not verified)

Mike - dimensions are 2.1”W x 3.78”H x 0.96”D. Yes, the belt clip is different since the pump is a different shape. Only the 3.0 ml is approved for use with the MiniMed 630G system. And you're very welcome - doing our best to keep up! :-)

I was reading the information on the new minimed pump. My daughter was diagnosed with T1 right after her 4th birthday and has been diabetic for almost 20 years. She has had Animas pump and is currently on the Tandem. We are always looking for more advanced alternatives to assist her in controlling her diabetes. She will not wear a CGM because she does not want another attachment and has read mixed reviews on the accuracy of these devices. Do you know if there will every be an attempt to fuse the CGM and insulin delivery into one site? I'm not sure that this is even possible, but we keep waiting to see if any company can develop such a pump. A cure is the real answer but until then.... we will continue to look for devices that will enable her to manage her diabetes with as little stress as possible. Thank you!

I can't talk about future products, Tina. But the idea of combining the infusion set and sensor is definitely something we've heard from others in the community and something we're exploring.

Your photos indicate the new pump can go INTO water. True for shower/swimming?

Submitted by Karrie Hawbaker (not verified) on

In reply to by Mary polemitis (not verified)

Yes, Mary. The MiniMed 630G pump is, at the time of manufacture, waterproof in up to 12 feet of water for up to 24 hours. The Guardian Link transmitter is waterproof up to 8 feet for up to 30 minutes.

Submitted by Tammy (not verified) on

In reply to by Karrie Hawbaker (not verified)

You stated the transmitter only last 30 minutes up to 8 feet of water. Is there a transmitter available that will last up to 12 feet of water for 24 hours like the pump? It seems odd for it to only work for 30 minutes and the 630G works for 24 hours.

Submitted by Karrie Hawbaker (not verified) on

In reply to by Tammy (not verified)

Hi Tammy, when the transmitter and sensor are connected, they form a water-tight seal to a depth of 8 feet for up to 30 minutes. This is how the product was tested and the only information we have to share.

Submitted by Karrie Hawbaker (not verified) on

In reply to by Shawn (not verified)

Shawn - the MiniMed 630G system is not compatible with the MiniMed Connect app (the radio frequency between the two pumps is different). However, we will continue to offer our MiniMed 530G system who find the ability to see pump/CGM info right on their phones the most valuable to them.

does the glucose monitor use a separate site or is it all in one? I currently have two children on minimed and we are hoping to move on to a CGM this fall.

Submitted by Karrie Hawbaker (not verified) on

In reply to by Holly RItzinger (not verified)

Hi Holly - the glucose sensor is a separate site on the body than the infusion set. However, you don't have to carry an additional receiver. The CGM is integrated with the pump, so you can see CGM information right on the pump screen. In addition, the MiniMed 530G and MiniMed 630G systems are the only ones to take action - the pump stops delivering insulin for up to 2 hours when the sensors hits a pre-set low. To learn more, go here and fill out the form and someone from our team will be in touch. http://medtronicdiabetes.com/products/minimed-630g-insulin-pump-system
