Happy first anniversary, MiniMed 530G with Enlite

Birthday Cake with Number 1

We’ve hit a major milestone here at Medtronic Diabetes. Today marks the first anniversary of the first shipment of our newest innovation, MiniMed 530G with Enlite

Since we received FDA approval in September of 2013, thousands of people with diabetes have ordered the new MiniMed 530G system, which features Threshold Suspend technology that stops insulin delivery when your sensor glucose values reach a preset low threshold and are unable to respond to the Threshold Suspend alarm. It also includes the much anticipated Enlite sensor, approved to be worn for six days with improvements in comfort and accuracy.

So how has the product performed?

Looking at the last 12 months of CareLink uploads, Threshold Suspend has kicked in and suspended insulin delivery over 740,000 times[1]. The events where insulin was suspended for the full two hours, 69% of them occurred during the nighttime[1].

But what are people saying?

We followed up with the first customer who received a MiniMed 530G system, Vince Myers, to see how things have gone over the last year. Here’s what he said:

“Since beginning with the MiniMed 530G with Enlite on October 16, 2013, I have experienced and maintained an A1c one full point lower than my previous averages. The MiniMed 530G with Enlite has provided me much more freedom and confidence to live life to the fullest through the consistent and accurate readings and delivery of insulin. Having my big brother on my hip has allowed me to reach my health goals while setting my sights on bigger and better challenges.”

Read his initial thoughts about the system here.

Here’s what other customers had to say about their experience using the new system:

“Overall, I found the new MiniMed 530G with Enlite came with a larger learning curve than I expected, but once I understood that and began moving along that curve, I really started to love my new system. And now, a few months in, I feel mostly back on auto-pilot again, and I’m happy to find the Enlite sensors are much more comfortable and accurate for me.” - Karen G.

“The MiniMed 530G insulin pump with continuous monitor has helped me in more ways than I could document.” – Bob B.

“I’ve been on the insulin pump for a little over 5 years now with great results after many years of 5 injections a day. Just this past January I started with the MiniMed 530G system with the Enlite sensor and like it a lot. I would never go back to multiple injections as this gives me so much control over what is happening.” – Shirley H.

“As a Bank Executive Officer, my schedule is generally filled with multiple daily meetings. The MiniMed 530G system allows me the flexibility of not having to schedule my meetings around meals or insulin injections, and also provides me with warning alerts of predicted high or low blood glucose levels.” – Mark K.

“The Enlite system/MiniMed 530G pump has been a Godsend for me!! I have hypoglycemia unawareness, and find myself trying to function with a 35 blood sugar – not good at work.” - Monica K.

“Since starting on the MiniMed 530G with Enlite, my diabetes has become easier to manage. The Enlite sensor and support from my start up team, who have worked with me in many areas, has helped me to stay in this target range. Additionally, I am now eating healthier, feeling better, and still determined to not let diabetes get the best of me.” - Kitty C.

We are thrilled to hear that the MiniMed 530G with Enlite is having such a positive impact for people with diabetes and we have appreciated all of your feedback shared this last year. We are committed to continuing to innovate and provide best-in-class technology that will transform diabetes care.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Medtronic Diabetes insulin infusion pumps, continuous glucose monitoring systems and associated components are limited to sale by or on the order of a physician and should only be used under the direction of a healthcare professional familiar with the risks associated with the use of these systems. MiniMed 530G with Enlite is intended for the delivery of insulin and continuous glucose monitoring for the management of diabetes mellitus by persons 16 years of age or older who require insulin.

Pump therapy is not recommended for people who are unwilling or unable to perform a minimum of four blood glucose tests per day. Insulin pumps use rapid-acting insulin. If your insulin delivery is interrupted for any reason, you must be prepared to replace the missed insulin immediately.

The information provided by CGM systems is intended to supplement, not replace, blood glucose information obtained using a home glucose meter. A confirmatory fingerstick is required prior to making adjustments to diabetes therapy. MiniMed 530G with Enlite is not intended to be used directly for preventing or treating hypoglycemia but to suspend insulin delivery when the user is unable to respond to the Threshold Suspend alarm and take measures to prevent or treat hypoglycemia themselves.

Warning: The Threshold Suspend feature will cause the pump to temporarily suspend insulin delivery for two hours when the sensor glucose reaches a set threshold. Under some conditions of use the pump can suspend again resulting in very limited insulin delivery. Prolonged suspension can increase the risk of serious hyperglycemia, ketosis, and ketoacidosis. Before using the Threshold Suspend feature, it is important to read the Threshold Suspend information in the MiniMed 530G System User Guide and discuss proper use of the Threshold Suspend feature with your healthcare provider.

Having the 530G pump and the Enlite Sensor really made my life easier. I have Diabetic unawareness and Dawn phenomena. The sensor when you inject it is pain-free( thank you). The pump when you check it is very accurate in its reading. I am not scared of passing out while driving in the freeway because I know the number in my pump is accurate. Thank you.

I'm very happy with my pump and it has made life with diabetes so much easier. I just wish Medtronic would put better effort into updating the Carelink Site so it can upload data and work with internet browsers like it used to. They sent out an email back in August saying it was close to a fix but nothing since and it still doesn't work. Medtronic is making millions off of diabetes sufferers. I know profits are the company's number 1 concern, but I wish they could spend a little to have someone research and fix the Carelink upload compatibility.

Angelo, I’m very happy to hear you’re doing well on insulin pump therapy. I’m sorry you had a negative experience with CareLink, and know compatibility issues can be frustrating. Please know that we absolutely do care about our customers, and Medtronic does everything we can to get new updates to the market as quickly as possible. CareLink Personal 5.12 was released on August 25, now compatible with windows 8.1, MAC OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), Internet Explorer, and Safari 7. You can find more information on the update here: http://www.loop-blog.com/carelink-personal-gets-an-upgrade/. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with.

NEED ASSISTANCE PLEASE: I am trying to figure out how to set the Minimed 530G system to read GRAMS instead of CARBS.

I cannot find the 'user manual' to learn how to reset the pump. I guess I am not using the proper wordage to figure this out. I am NOT the patient but I am trying to help my friend figure out how to do this, he cannot locate his User Manual. Can somebody help guide to the right place here online?

I've been asking this question often when I call Medtronic's help line and I never get an answer that makes me understand this.....I am on the 530G w/Enlite since April 2014, and I love it, however I'd really like for someone to explain to me why when I bolus and am below my target range the 530G does not take active insulin into the consideration. My trainer told me to follow what the pump says because it is smarter than me! so at first I did, however after going low a few times after this situation occurred I began to do the math myself and deduct the active insulin before giving my bolus. As a person who experienced frequent and severe lows prior to going on the 530G (and that was one of my main reasons for picking the 530G because of the threshold suspend) I am very careful about watching that I do not go low.

I cannot understand why the 530G would not take active insulin into consideration when you are below your target range already. This seems to be a bug in the system to me.

The 530G also does not take active insulin into consideration when I am in my target range but this I can understand since the bolus/correction you do should be bringing you to the low end of your range and if you are not there then the active insulin should be what you need to get you there.

Thanks,
Robin

Robin, I’m sorry you haven’t gotten a clear explanation of how your pump calculates active insulin. If you bolus using the Bolus Wizard feature, your pump calculates an estimated bolus that factors in on how much active insulin is left in your body from prior boluses. I will have someone from my team connect with you to help. In the meantime, you may find this blog on explaining active insulin helpful: http://www.loop-blog.com/explaining-active-insulin/. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with!

NEXT STEPove the CGM System.
Now that Congress has not moved to approve the CGM System in the following bills HR 5644 and S2689, what is the next step to re submit this vital legislation for final approval?
Now it seems ONCE AGAIN to be up to Congress to make this happen.
It is Important for everyone who cares about this issue to Advocate for CGM Coverage .Preventive medical care should be the cornerstone policy for all health care insurance here in America.
Please keep advocates in a form of update on this iwssue.

I love my 530G with Enlite CGM!! But I do have one question/concern now that I have settled in on using this. Every now and then I will get a "No Delivery" error and can't always get it to clear out without it happening again a few tries later. I have even made sure the tubing was not being restricted/constricted. I also will have some days where my sugar will stay high no matter what I do to correct it, it seems as if nothing will bring it down until many hours later. I also have the vice versa happening too. My sugar will be too low too long no matter if I suspend and/or treat with juice/candy. It just stays low for hours.Could this possibly be a malfunction in my pump? Has anyone else reported any problems similar to this? I did not have this issue with my previous pump.
