Announcing Real-Time CGM Integration Between InPen and the Guardian Connect System

In August 2020, we announced the acquisition of Companion Medical and the InPen, which is the only FDA-cleared smart* insulin pen system paired with an integrated diabetes management app. Today, we are thrilled to announce the integration of the InPen with our Guardian Connect CGM system. With the power of the Guardian Connect CGM, InPen will help people get to the right dose at the right time, by having all the data they need in one convenient place.

InPen is an insulin pen system designed for individuals using insulin injections and want the benefits of smart diabetes tech. The InPen app gets information from the InPen to keep track of diabetes data and help with insulin management decisions. It automatically records insulin doses, tracks active insulin, and recommends mealtime and correction doses based on a bolus calculator. These features are especially impactful when it comes to determining how much insulin to give.

Guess Less, Live More

Now that InPen is part of the Medtronic family, we’ve been able to quickly integrate it with the Guardian Connect CGM system. This is the first and only real-time** smart CGM plus smart pen combined in one app—to integrate your therapy management. Insulin insights and CGM data now appear together, so you can view doses, active insulin, and current glucose in one view without switching apps. The InPen app uses data from both your pen and sensor to record your insulin and glucose instantly, helping to eliminate the hassles of logging glucose levels manually. Within the InPen app, you’ll be able to see your glucose readings and trendlines in 3-, 6-, 12- or 24-hour views.

In addition, CGM data will be available in the Insights Report through the InPen app. Seeing all of your diabetes information all in one place helps give you the information you need for easier decision-making and diabetes management.

Some things to remember…

We’re very excited about this first-ever integration, and it’s only our first step in this direction. Keep in mind, you will still need to have both the InPen and Guardian Connect apps on your smartphone to enable real-time data sharing. InPen will be used to manage insulin and dosing, while the Guardian Connect app will manage your glucose and alerts. You will need to enter a blood glucose reading to calibrate in the Guardian Connect app and to use the bolus calculator in the InPen app. Since the data sharing is made possible by CareLink Personal software, you’ll also need to have an internet connection to see data in real time. Our goal is to continue building upon this technology and ease the burden of the daily decisions of managing diabetes.

The Guardian Connect system requires a prescription and is indicated for continuous or periodic monitoring of glucose levels in the interstitial fluid under the skin, in patients (14 to 75 years of age) with diabetes mellitus. The system is intended to complement, not replace, information obtained from standard blood glucose monitoring devices, and is not recommended for people who are unwilling or unable to perform a minimum of two meter blood glucose tests per day, or for people who are unable or unwilling to maintain contact with their healthcare professional. The system requires a functioning mobile electronic device with correct settings. If the mobile device is not set up or used correctly, you may not receive sensor glucose information or alerts. The system is intended to complement, not replace, information obtained from standard blood glucose monitoring devices. All therapy adjustments should be based on measurements obtained from standard blood glucose monitoring devices and not on values provided by the system.

The CareLink software is intended for use as a tool to help manage diabetes. The purpose of the software is to take information transmitted from insulin pumps, glucose meters and continuous glucose monitoring systems, and turn it into CareLink reports. The reports provide information that can be used to identify trends and track daily activities—such as carbohydrates consumed, meal times, insulin delivery, and glucose readings. NOTE: CareLink report data is intended for use as an adjunct in the management of diabetes only and NOT intended to be relied upon by itself. Patients should consult their healthcare providers familiar with the management of diabetes prior to making changes in treatment. The InPen requires a prescription. It is a home-use reusable pen injector for single-patient use by people with diabetes under the supervision of an adult caregiver, or by a patient age 7 and older for the self-injection of a desired dose of insulin. The pen injector is compatible with Lilly Humalog® U-100 3.0 mL cartridges, Novo Nordisk Novolog® U-100 3.0 mL cartridges, and Novo Nordisk Fiasp® U-100 3.0 mL cartridges and single-use detachable and disposable pen needles (not included). The pen injector allows the user to dial the desired dose from 0.5 to 30 units in one-half (1/2) unit increments.

The InPen dose calculator, a component of the InPen app, is indicated for the management of diabetes by people with diabetes under the supervision of an adult caregiver, or by a patient age 7 and older for calculating an insulin dose or carbohydrate intake based on user entered data.

For an insulin dose based on amount of carbohydrates, a healthcare professional must provide patient-specific target blood glucose, insulin-to-carbohydrate ratio, and insulin sensitivity parameters to be programmed into the software prior to use.
