6 things you probably don’t know about the new MiniMed™ 630G system

MiniMed 630G insulin pump

You might have already heard about the exciting updates made on our new MiniMed™ 630G system, from the remote bolusing option to waterproofing. But when it comes to diabetes tech, sometimes the little things make a big difference. That’s why we listened to the diabetes community and incorporated your feedback throughout the design process.  As a result, here are six features/capabilities that are new in the MiniMed™ 630G system.

  1. Intuitive navigation and a new status bar for easy access to your information

Your home screen now shows the following:

notification

  • Active insulin
  • Any BG reading taken within the last 12 minutes (only when CGM isn’t active, otherwise it shows the latest CGM reading)
  • Bolus and basal options
  1. Customized Basal Patterns

Different insulin needs on sick days or active game days? There are now up to 8 basal patterns which include new settings for Workday, Day Off, and Sick Day. And there are also 8 preset temp basals which include new settings for “High Activity, Moderate Activity, Low Activity, and Sick”.

  1. Preset Bolus Option

Do you eat the same breakfast every morning? You can save a preset bolus so that with a couple of button pushes you can receive the exact dose of insulin that you know you need.

  1. Event Markers and Reminder Options

You can now set various event markers to optimize your diabetes management. Account for blood sugar checks, injections, food and exercise all on your pump. This means that when you’re reviewing your data with your doctor, you can have more context to your discussions. You can also set reminders just like you would on your cell phone. You can set personal reminders or things like a reminder to check your blood sugar, complete a bolus, or change your infusion set.

  1. Optional Airplane Mode

The MiniMed™ 630G system now offers an airplane mode option for air travel. This option prevents the pump from receiving wireless communication from other devices all while still collecting data from your CGM (for up to 10 hours).

  1. Auto-brightness with Color Screen

Since we heard feedback from the community that color screens on other pumps can be difficult to see in daylight, we made sure to include the ability to adjust the screen display brightness. You can even set your pump to auto-brightness which will automatically adjust the screen on your behalf when changing environments.

So which of these are most exciting to you? Let us know in the comments!

Important Safety Information
The MiniMed 530G and 630G systems with SmartGuard technology are intended for the delivery of insulin and continuous glucose (CGM) monitoring for the management of diabetes mellitus in persons 16 years of age or older who require insulin. Insulin infusion pumps and associated components of insulin infusion systems are limited to sale by or on the order of a physician and should only be used under the direction of a healthcare professional familiar with the risks of insulin pump therapy.
The systems are not intended to be used directly for preventing or treating hypoglycemia but to suspend insulin delivery when the user is unable to respond to the Suspend on low alarm and take measures to prevent or treat hypoglycemia themselves. The information provided by CGM systems is intended to supplement, not replace, blood glucose information obtained using a blood glucose meter.
A confirmatory fingerstick via a CONTOUR®NEXT LINK portfolio meter*, is required prior to making adjustments to diabetes therapy. Always check the pump display when using a CONTOUR®NEXT LINK portfolio meter*, to ensure the glucose result shown agrees with the glucose results shown on the meter.  Additional, warnings, precautions and contraindications apply.  See www.medtronicdiabetes.com/support/download-library/user-guides and www.medtronicdiabetes.com/importantsafetyinformation for details. *The CONTOUR®NEXT LINK 2.4 Meter is used with the MiniMed 630G system. The CONTOUR®NEXT LINK Meter is used with the MiniMed 530G system.

As an active T1D I feel the 630 is much too large and clunky. I have worn the 530G for over 10 years with the 1.8ml reservoir. It’s small enough to comfortably tuck in the front of my sports bra. I’d much rather have a small size pump to tuck into my clothing as I do not and will never wear it on a belt clip for several reasons. Mainly because it flies off , tears at my infusion set and gets bumped during sports. I ski, ride horses and work out several times a week. Please Medtronic do not discontinue the smaller size 1.8 ml pump. Give your loyal customers the right to choose to keep what works best for them.

Summer, thank you for reaching out and for your feedback. At this time the 600 series insulin pumps do only come with the 3 ml reservoir. However, I have made sure to share your feedback with our team.

I Agree!!!!
I have the 630G minimed pump and I hate the size of this pump. I'm average size, but I already don't have many places to put my pump. The larger size is inconvenient for the many fashion choices I make :). I also see that the larger reservoir size has no benefit to me. I change my reservoir when I change my site every 3 days, With the smaller reservoir site, that was possible. The 3 ml is just a lot of wasted space.

I agree this 630G is too large. It seems with all the new technology this pump should be much smaller. Is there a new pump out that is the same size as the 530. I wear my pump all the time clipped to my bra and no only every sees it. I can remove it while dinner with family and friends and return it to my bra without anyone ever knowing it. Why does it need to be so obvious now. May I exchange it. Please answer all questions. Thanks. JSJ

Thanks for reaching out Janice. The MiniMed 630G and MiniMed 670G systems are both only available in the larger 3.0 mL size. In regards to options for exchange to a previous model pump system, I recommend speaking with our Customer Support team to discuss your options. They'll be able to review your account and provide the most up to date information for you. Please give them a call at 800.646.4633, option 5.

In reply to by Summer Shull (not verified)

Agree! Please Medtronic, these larger pumps are NOT an advancement. I came here trying to see specs on the 530g compared to the 630g, The 530g is large enough, I read the comment the 630g is bigger to accommodate the AA battery, to which I'd say I'd much rather have a smaller insulin pump to wear and I don't care about a color screen. Size is a huge concern, any bigger and I'll be looking at alternative options outside of Medtronic if/when they discontinue the smaller sized pumps. Wishing it could be smaller yet!

Submitted by Karrie Hawbaker (not verified) on

In reply to by Jessica (not verified)

We appreciate the feedback, Jessica. You are correct, the increase in size is due to the AA battery used to power the color screen, as well as all of the features of our most technologically advanced insulin pump system. The overall increase between the 3.0 mL size of pumps is only a 17% volume difference and 5.1 grams heavier with the battery inserted. If you'd like to discuss your options and concerns in more detail, please give our device specialists at 800.646.4633, option 3.

I use the MiniMed Connect a lot with my 530G. Will there be an option to connect my pump to my phone? The app is very useful for me.

Great news about the 630G. Looking forward to a color screen. My issue is the size and what will the Pathway upgrade cost be? And since I have Medicare as my primary and UHC as my secondary will I be forced back to my %@#/CGMS in 2+ years after my original warranty on my 523 expired???

Steve, we have a variety of different programs that will help many customers upgrade to the MiniMed 630G system. They vary by insurance coverage, time since you bought your last pump etc. Please check back with us in November as we'll have all of our programs finalized by then.

No improvement for the hearing impaired? I cannot hear the audio alarms on my 530g. I sleep through the viberate alarms with the pump clipped to the inside of my pajama at my waist so I have no warrior between my pump and stomach. I still manage to sleep through several threshold suspensions per month. I am looking forward to upgrading to the 630G as,soon as possible

Alva
I am also hearing impaired and an option for a louder alarm would be a welcome benefit. I wear my pump so it rest on my breast plate at night and it has not failed to wake me. I'm not sure anything would wake me with a low BG, the threshold suspend is a welcome option.

I just got my 630G yesterday and I can't wait until I am officially trained to use it.

When I got my first insulin pump almost 17 years ago, the alarms were loud enough to hear them. I think that was the 508 model. With the next pump models, the alarms were made to be quieter so others could not hear it or notice it. However, the alarms were so high pitched, I had difficulty hearing them. With the 630G, were the alarm sounds corrected back to the 508 version?

When will the screen protector films be available for the 630G? I don't have so many issues with the outer casing of the pump. The problem I have is when I wear the pump on my jeans waistband and I get too close to counters and sinks, the pump face can scrape against those edges and get really scratched up. I want to protect this pump as much as possible. The silicone case doesn't provide any protection to the display screen. Is there a template available that can be used until the films are available for this pump model?

Is the travel bag discontinued? I keep some of my pump supplies, my emergency kit and my glucose monitor all in this bag and take it practically everywhere I go. In the last 16 years, I have worn out at least 3 bags. It's somewhat of my "ball and chain." The bag holds things for "too high," "too low," and "just right." I hate to see this bag discontinued. Will there be a replacement available if this bag is no longer available?

We're excited for you, Deanna! The MiniMed 630G system alarm is adjustable and two times louder than MiniMed 530G models. The vibration alarm levels are also different, but it isn't the same as the previous 508 models.

The screen protectors will be available on the online store next month so be sure to check back with us or on our online store then. The travel mate is still available along with additional options. Yes, Debbie. While your pump and sensor data is available on the pump screen, you still need to wear two different sites.

In reply to by Commenter (not verified)

The 630G appears to address some issues I experience with my 530G, so I'm looking forward to the opportunity to trade up. The screen appears better in contrast than the green screen, which I have trouble reading the small important numbers like active insulin without reading glasses, especially in the middle of the night. The other improvement with alarm volume increase and vibration will be helpful as many of us with 530G and prior systems find the alarms inaudible to wake up to. Initially, I woke to the sound or vibration, but eventually, our body and minds learn to ignore them when sleeping.

Will the 630G use the same reservoir as the other pump with the glucose sensor? Is it worth switching to the new pump if you go off the glucose sensor? From looking at pictures of the 630G, it looks much bigger, is it? I have been using a Minimed pump for almost 30 years and so use to using it how it is now. With my brain injury, I do not do well with learning new things very easy. Would the new one be hard to adjust to? Sorry for so many questions. I have plans to getting a new one in 2016. I just don't know what I should do about getting a new one with the newest coming out.

Submitted by LOOP Blog Editorial on

In reply to by Laura Gross (not verified)

Laura, the new system is approved to be used with the 3.0mL reservoir currently used with our other models of pumps. There's a 17% size increase and the main reason for the increase over Paradigm is to accommodate the AA battery which is required to properly power the pump and color screen. The system was created to be user-friendly and we will make sure all of our customers have thorough to set you up for success. If you want to chat about this in more detail, give us a call or let me know and I'll get you connected with someone from my team.

I have a 523 model and prefer its size over the 723 model. What are the dimensions of the 670? I think I have been told that it is bigger than the 523. I initially got the 723(?), but felt the size was too big and returned it for the smaller 523. Size will play a role in my purchase of a pump which will be soon. I do not need a 300 unit reservoir if I am to switch infusion sets every 2-3 days. 180 has been fine, but I think a 200 unit would be best.

i wear the CgM monitor Enlite. It has the worst insertion device ever engineered!!! I date back to the bent needle 501. One of your first customers with Minimed. Your pump is clear plastic , old insertion devices were all translucent, why not in the last 5? Years. A child can invent a better insertion device. Is there a new one available ? This black box with the green needle insertion device is a disgrace!!! Any help will be highly appreciated. Thank you, an original customer and Guinea Pig!!!

Thanks for the feedback, Scott. I'm sorry that you've had a negative experience with the Enlite Serter. The MiniMed 630G system uses the new one-press serter, designed to simplify the insertion experience and make the Enlite sensor easier to use. It requires only one button press during the entire insertion process. If you need help with your current sensor, please call our 24-Hour HelpLine team.

Is there an improvement for the hearing impaired with the 630G System? I currently have the 530G system… Even with my Hearing Aids on the audible beeping I cannot heard… The vibrate mode is helpful but the beeping still comes on in some cases (?) and I am contently told by people that my pump is beeping… Does the new 630G System’s pump have a different audible frequency option that that would help hard of hearing people like me?

I see no mention of encryption between the handset and pump.

Such a basic, simple anti-hacking measure is vital nowadays. Even if the risk is low, the possible consequences of hacking could be fatal.

I'm hoping you just didn't mention encryption. Please don't tell me comms are in clear.
