Breaking News: FDA Approves the MiniMed 670G System, World’s First Hybrid Closed Loop System

This post originally appeared on The LOOP blog on September 28, 2016 written by Karrie Hawbaker.
Today we have fantastic news to share – Medtronic has received FDA approval of the world’s first hybrid closed loop system! The MiniMed® 670G system is the most advanced insulin pump and sensor system designed to help people with type 1 diabetes spend less time worrying about their glucose levels and more time living their lives.
We know that people with diabetes can live amazing lives and achieve incredible things – you show us that every day! But we also know it takes an incredible amount of work to get and keep those glucose numbers in range. Our vision is to transform diabetes care together, for greater freedom and better health. Part of that means helping you spend more time in range so that instead of worrying so much about your diabetes, you can feel your best and focus on running that marathon, walking across that graduation stage, or just hanging out with friends and family on the beach.
There’s still more to do as we continue our work toward even more advanced solutions like a fully closed loop system. But the MiniMed 670G system is a big step toward that vision and we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring it to you.
SmartGuard™ HCL Technology. Less Worry. More Time in Range.
With our exclusive SmartGuard HCL technology, MiniMed 670G is a hybrid closed loop system. But what does that mean and how does it work? Well, when in Auto Mode, the pump automatically adjusts the delivery of your basal insulin (all that insulin your body needs when you’re not bolusing for food) based on our new, most advanced Guardian® Sensor 3. Auto Mode uses a target of 120 mg/dL and you do still have to enter carbs when you eat and enter blood glucose (BG) readings to calibrate the sensor– that’s why it’s called a hybrid closed loop system. But by automating that basal insulin, the MiniMed 670G system is requiring a lot less input from you than previous pumps and sensors.
Our New Guardian Sensor 3. Trusted to Power a Hybrid Closed Loop System.
The MiniMed 670G system includes our newest and most advanced CGM, the Guardian Sensor 3 and the Guardian Link 3 transmitter. In addition to enhanced accuracy and performance and a 7-day life, the Guardian Sensor 3 incorporates diagnostic technology that continuously monitors how the sensor is doing, resulting in a CGM system trusted to power the hybrid closed loop system. It’s the only sensor approved to drive the amount of insulin delivered by a pump.
We Hear You. You Need Options.
If there’s one thing that you’ve taught us, it’s that you like options! So if you’re not quite ready for Auto Mode available in SmartGuard HCL technology (and you probably won’t be if you’re first starting out on a pump and sensor), the system has two additional versions of SmartGuard technology available to you:
- The Suspend on low feature (also available in the MiniMed 530G and MiniMed 630G systems) stops insulin delivery for up to two hours when the CGM sensor reaches a preset low.
- The Suspend before low feature stops insulin delivery when the sensor is predicted to reach a low limit and resumes after sensor glucose levels recover.
A Spring 2017 Arrival.
While we’ve been working closely with the FDA on this product submission for the last several months, the approval did come much earlier than expected. Given this and the novel nature of the technology, we won’t be ready to ship the MiniMed 670G system until spring of 2017. In the meantime, we’ll be taking on important work such as getting our manufacturing lines ready, working with payers to secure reimbursement, and training our employees, physicians and diabetes educators on the new system to bring you the best possible onboarding experience.
Get On the Fast Track.
If you want to be first in line to receive the new system, check out the Priority Access program. Anyone who purchases a MiniMed 630G system between August 11, 2016 and when we ship the MiniMed 670G system will be eligible to upgrade to the new system for $299. In addition, if you want to take advantage of your end-of-year insurance benefits, you can buy your MiniMed 630G system between now and December 31st and pay $0 to upgrade, provided you participate in an approved System Access program. The MiniMed Family
The MiniMed 670G system is approved for people with type 1 diabetes, age 14 and older. Built on the same pump platform as the recently launched MiniMed 630G system, it also comes in our latest pump design with more customizable options and convenient features like a waterproof design and a color screen.
The MiniMed 670G system is the latest addition to a family of advanced diabetes management products. We’ll continue to offer other systems such as the MiniMed 630G system and the MiniMed 530G system with the MiniMed® Connect mobile app, which allows you and your loved ones to see your pump and CGM information right on your phone.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
The Medtronic MiniMed 670G system is intended for continuous delivery of basal insulin (at user selectable rates) and administration of insulin boluses (in user selectable amounts) for the management of Type 1 diabetes mellitus in persons, fourteen years of age and older, requiring insulin as well as for the continuous monitoring and trending of glucose levels in the fluid under the skin. The MiniMed 670G System includes SmartGuard HCL technology, which can be programmed to automatically adjust delivery of basal insulin based on Continuous Glucose Monitor sensor glucose values, and can suspend delivery of insulin when the sensor glucose value falls below or is predicted to fall below predefined threshold values.
The Medtronic MiniMed 670G System consists of the following devices:
MiniMed 670G insulin pump, the Guardian Link (3) transmitter, the Guardian Sensor (3), One-Press Serter, and the Contour NEXT Link 2.4 glucose meter. The system requires a prescription.
The Guardian Sensor (3) glucose values are not intended to be used directly for making therapy adjustments, but rather to provide an indication of when a fingerstick may be required. All therapy adjustments should be based on measurements obtained using a home blood glucose monitor and not on values provided by the Guardian Sensor (3).
WARNING: Do not use Auto Mode for a period of time after giving a manual injection of insulin by syringe or pen. Manual injections are not accounted for in Auto Mode. Therefore, Auto Mode could deliver too much insulin. Too much insulin may cause hypoglycemia. Consult with your healthcare professional for how long you need to wait after a manual injection of insulin before you resume Auto Mode.
The MiniMed 670G system is not approved for use in pregnant women and patients with impaired kidney function. For complete warnings, precautions, and contraindications, please consult the User Guide.

Can you explain what exactly is automatic about “Auto” mode? How will the interaction be with basal and bolus for those who eat often and maybe do not input carbs for every meal?
Will it spike basal insulin to match the meal BG spike? How will it work if that spike is only sugar, and dips after a short period of time?
Auto Mode automatically adjusts basal insulin delivery based on sensor glucose values and recent insulin delivery needs. Auto Mode uses a target of 120 mg/dL and requires you to enter carbs when you eat and enter blood glucose (BG) readings to calibrate the sensor. In order to receive bolus insulin delivery, you would have to enter meal announcements on the system or enter a BG value in order to receive a recommended bolus.
Sara Iam very interested in this machine and would like one how do I get on a list to receive one or try it out 3154890197 billiejo vecchio
Great! A member of my team will contact you to discuss your options.
I am interested in the 670 closed loop pump. I currently use a 530 pump with a realtime sensor. And transmitter. My doctor is sending an Rx and is writing a letter to Medtronic regarding my need to get the proper pump for better control. Since I have never felt insulin reactions.
Thanks for loyalty, Wanda. We are now onboarding the rest of those enrolled in the Priority Access Program who signed up to be first in line to receive the system upon commercial launch. In parallel, we are also taking new orders from interested customers – like you – who want to be next in line to receive the system after Priority Access orders are fulfilled. To be placed in the order queue, customers can call a Medtronic representative at 1.800.646.4633 or visit http://bit.ly/2qLNCoA.

Hi, I have been diabetic for 40 years, since age 12!! How would I get one of these minuted 670g devices? I live in Canada!! My email address is cb4096@fmcsf.ab.ca. I look forward to hearing from you! Carol Broughton
Hi Carol, the MiniMed 670G system is currently only approved for use in the US. We expect regulatory approval outside the US in Summer 2017, but I cannot yet speak to which countries. We do have the MiniMed 630G system available in Canada. If you’re interested in learning more about that system, contact your local team who will be more than happy to help answer your questions: 1-866-444-4649.
I can see the sensor part that connects to the body but is there a separate device that gives you reading of bs or is that shown in the pump itself.?
Teal, your sensor glucose reading is shown on the pump.
I used 712,722,723,751, I want to buy, please contact me in Chinese, my phone 8589005777, thank you

Hi Sara, I currently use the 630G Insulin Pump with CGM and I have a terrible time with it showing me readings anywhere close to what my actual blood glucose levels are (I woke up one morning about a week ago and my pump showed my b/s to be 311 but when I checked it, it was 134). I typically calibrate 4 times a day (first thing in the morning, lunch, dinner and bedtime) Will the new 670G be more accurate? Also, I’ve been told that the old CGM sensors can’t be used with the new CGM and that’s very disappointing because I’ve got about 2 – 2 1/2 months worth.
Hi Donna. I have forwarded your concern to our Customer Service Center so someone should be reaching out to you within the coming days to follow up. In regards to your question on the MiniMed 670G system, the MiniMed 670G pump uses the new Guardian Sensor 3 which has imrpoved accuracy.
I have several boxes of the “old” sensors, can those be exchanged for ones that will work with the new CGM? If so, how do I go about exchanging them?
I am currently a user of the 530G with Enlite sensors. I sometimes have problems with the sensor due to incorrect numbers caused by sleeping on my stomach (too much pressure on the site), forgotten calibrations (the pump did not ask if I wanted to use a meter bg to calibrate), or calibration errors (for various reasons). Although I still use the sensor, I am not always able to trust it as much as I would like to. The Auto feature is something I have dreamed about having ever since I first got the sensor, but I am somewhat skeptical about it because of the unreliability of the sensor. Is the Guardian Sensor 3 more (or how much more) reliable than the Enlite?
Hi Nathan. The Guardian Sensor 3 is an entirely new CGM sensor and is the first and only sensor approved by the FDA to power a hybrid closed loop system. It incorporates diagnostic technology that continuously monitors sensor health. If you would like to learn more about the sensor and system, please contact our device specialist at 800.646.4633 option #3.
My name is gary Seppa . I live in Toronto , Canada . If and when Medtronics wishes to test it’s artificial pancreas in Canada , I would be very happy to volunteer .
I have been using the tubeless insulin pump for a year and I love it . My blood sugar control has improved immensely .
I am ready to move on to the next technology .
Gary – Glad you’re excited about the new MiniMed 670G system, too! We’re not sure about Canada specifically, but we are anticipating we’ll be able to start rolling out the new product outside the U.S. in the summer of 2017.
Dear Sara,
My daughter 16 years is diagnosed diabetes 1 since month ago. I would like to know approximately the new pump cost ? We are outside USA. Just need to know if it could be affordable yo get it or not? Just need approx price please .
Hi Salwa. The MiniMed 670G system is currently only approved in the US. Regulatory approval outside of the US is expected in the summer of 2017.
The price of the MiniMed 670G system will be comparable to our current system prices, and will vary depending on the individuals payer and benefit plan.
Hi Salwa, i am currently on an insulin pump and i am very eager to upgrade to the newest but i and right there with you about the pricing. i have been a loyal medtronic pump wearer since 2012, and when i called to see about upgrading they told me that the cost out of pocket right now would be $3100 and thats with a $500 trade-in value on my current pump. and from what i have heard, medtronic is offering this new pump to others who use other brands of pumps at a way cheaper price to get them to switch over to medtronic.
all in all i love medtronic and love my pump and wish i could upgrade now but i cant at the moment. and i have insurance. but having your daughter on an insulin pump will completely change her life for the better and will make it so much easier for her to manage her diabetes.
This is amazing news! I’ve been a Type 1 diabetic for 31 years….since 9 years old. I’m so happy!
what is the price of this device?
Khalid, we’ll have more information on pricing closer to the spring when the system is available.
Will it be in line with the current Medtronic pricing models for MiniMeds?
Steve, more information on pricing of the MiniMed 670G system will be shared in the spring when it’s commercially available.
Sara, I am Type 1 and have had my 530G pump since 2012. At that time, we had private insurance which covered the pump at 80/20. However, since that time I have gone on Medicare parts A and B, with a supplemental Medigap policy. Would the new 630G pump be covered in any way by Medicare? My pump supplies currently are covered 100% by Part B, if that helps you decide. I was under the impression that Medicare would not cover sensors for pump users and that I would have to pay for those out of pocket. Would it still be beneficial to change to the new pump even if I could not afford to get the sensors? Thanks for answering.
Hi Sandy. Please email me your contact information at betweenthelines@medtronic.com, and I will have one of my team members get in touch with you to discuss your options.
Sandy, I would check with Medicare directly but just yesterday I heard that Medicare and Medicaid have decided to approve glucose sensor’s effective in April 2017. Finally they are getting up-to-date with the most recent and most aggressive protocol!
Where can we go to get any published peer-reviewed study data ion the use of this device?
Evan, the pivotal trial data of our MiniMed 670G system are published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA): http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=2552454.
Thank you. That was very helpful.
Pump- Artificial Pancreas-Cure. With my pump I calculate and enter, what makes the Artificial Pancreas any better? Still manually entering.Seems like just another reason a Viable cure will not be developed. TOO MUCH MONEY TOO BE MADE TREATING this Horrible and Robbing Disease. When will we STOP being MONEY DRIVEN and pool all or Scientific Teams together and Actually Cure this Disease. It seems we have Resigned ourselves into Diabetic Careers. My 11 year old Daughter was Diagnoised in 2014, I can tell you there is Nothing more Heart Breaking than to watch what she must endure daily. I read about the same GROUND BREAKING and JUST AROUND THE CORNER CURES now that I read about then. Reading about Type 1 it seems the Wait and Hope has been going on for over 60 years with the same Promise ” Within 5 Years” My Daughter deals with this Every Day 24 Hours a Day.
Hi Ronny, I’m sorry you’re upset and understanding your concern. Until a cure is found, our focus is on improving and extending lives through technology. Our ultimate vision is to develop a fully automated closed loop system that would require minimal to no interaction from the person with diabetes. The MiniMed 670G system is a big step toward that vision, and we think can have a very big impact on the lives of people with diabetes.
Thank you, I agree. I am a Type I diabetic living with it for over 35 years now. I can say technology has come a long way! I was skeptical and really unsure of the pump and sensor system. I am glad I gave it a try, I love it. I can’t imagine going back to swords!!
You are absolutely right. There is so much money in treating diabetes (type 1), a cure would be devastating to the industry. It’s all about the money, not the people affected.
I use a Model Mini Med 530G with an Elite sensor/transmitter. After using this for over a year, I still have some reservations bout calling any devise that measures interstitial fluid a product that is a “worry free” device. I test by blood glucose (as i did before I had my sensor) 7 or more times per day. What I don’t like is that while my comparative readings between my interstitial fluid (sensor) numbers and my blood glucose are very close when my trending is “flat,” it can very a lot after meals (who it rises quickly) or when my BG starts to drop rapidly during exercise. This isn’t a complaint (it is the reality, I believe) as much as a lead up to a question: Does this new technology do a better job in matching my interstitial fluid (sensor) readings to my actual blood glucose levels when by BG rises and drops (when arrows show up on my monitor showing rapid changes)? Will the new device’s technology manage my diabetes automatically and do it better than with my existing Elite sensor? If not, I am concerned that this device might not get any of us much closer from reaching the vision of “greater freedom and better health.” As a person that has had Type 1 diabetes since 1969, you don’t need to oversell this device. I am extremely happy with the advances in technology that you have created that allow my AICs to be in the low 6s.
Hi Steve – Great questions, and I understand your concern. The MiniMed 670G system uses the Guardian Sensor 3, an entirely new CGM sensor. It is our most advanced glucose sensor with enhanced accuracy and performance, and a longer 7-day life. It incorporates diagnostic technology that continuously monitors sensor health, and is the only sensor trusted to power a hybrid closed loop system.
The MiniMed 670G system features our most advanced SmartGuard technology. The previous version of the SmartGuard technology available in the MiniMed 630G and MiniMed 530G systems takes action to reduce lows by automatically stopping insulin delivery for up to 2 hours when the sensor glucose value reaches a preset low limit. In the MiniMed 670G system, SmartGuard HCL technology has two new, advanced features called Auto Mode and Suspend before low.
I hope this helps!
It seems indian I.T company HCL is making its way.
Can this device be used by type 2 diabetes who are shots dependent as well?
Nabeel, the MiniMed 670G system is currently only approved for people with type 1 diabetes, ages 14 and older. We do have the Minimed 630G system that is available for people with type 2 diabetes. Let me know if you’re interested in learning more and discussing your options, and I’ll have someone from my team contact you.
Closed loop systems can not be efficient as long as the insulin used has such a slow onset. Insulin formulations are a major bottle-neck of these devices, becsuse they stay active for 3-5 hours (read- designed for pens) while physiological insulin, once delivered in the portal vein lasts 6 minutes. So lets not pretend that this is a major ‘invention’.
We can speculate that the approval of this device has some connection with the ultra-fast insulins that are in the last phases of clinical trials. Hopefully it will allow a diabetic to eat food with somewhat higher GI. But again, when I saw the headline, I expected something smarter. Such a disappointment!
I’m sorry that you feel this way, Nora. There’s still more to do as we continue our work toward even more advanced solutions like a fully closed loop system. But the MiniMed 670G system is a big step toward that vision and we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring it to you.
Can you explain the difference between this and a fully closed loop system?
Cameron, the MiniMed 670G system is a hybrid closed loop system, which means that when used in Auto Mode, the pump automatically adjusts the delivery of your basal insulin based on readings from our new, most advanced CGM sensor, the Guardian Sensor 3. It also gives you two other SmartGuard HCL technology options: Suspend on low (which is also in MiniMed 630G) and Suspend before low (which is new).
Hi I were the 530g it’s assume but this sound better does it give you basale insulin and adjust can I get more info thanks

Hi Sara,
I’m Cesar, from Dominican Republic. 28 years old and been a type 1 for 7 years. I am very interested in knowing more about this technology and how would it improve my quality of life. I use pen insulin, and I’m starting to get tired of the constant inyections sereveral times per day, so as you can see I’m looking for a change. I’m willing to go wherever is necessary.
Thanks you!
Hi Cesar. We’re the US team, but please check here for local contacts who would be happy to help http://bit.ly/1ce3pEc.
What will the cost be, my son has minimed pump but doubt this will be available with the nhs in the uk for quite a long time if ever.
Ann, While I cannot comment specifically on the UK, regulatory approval outside of the U.S. is expected in the summer of 2017.
I currently use a Paradigm pump but should receive the 630 pump soon. I plan on purchasing the sensor in near future but shall incur full cost because my insurance refuses to cover it (even with much help from my endocrinologist and Medtronic). Will the current sensor be compatible with the 670 pump or should I wait to purchase the senso?
Ann, the MiniMed 630G system uses a different sensor than the MiniMed 670G. The MiniMed 630G uses the Enlite sensor, and the MiniMed 670G system uses the Guardian Sensor 3.
Hi . I currently live in Minnesota living with type one juvenile diabetes since the age of 4 now a 22 yr old . I would love to be a volunteer if needed for studies that are being done on this new advice .
Hi Emily, it’s great you want to be involved in clinical trials! You can learn more about our trials by heading over to http://www.clinicaltrials.gov, and typing “Medtronic Diabetes” into the search bar.
Where can I get brochures and specifics on exactly how this device works?
Hi Keith. We will have more information on the MiniMed 670G system closer to commercial launch in the spring. In the meantime, you can learn more about the system here: https://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/priority-access and here: http://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/blog/fda-approves-minimed-670g-system-worlds-first-hybrid-closed-loop-system/
The FDA site says that the 670G “The system will automatically resume delivery of insulin once sensor glucose values rise above a predetermined threshold. While in auto mode, the system can automatically adjust basal insulin by continuously increasing, decreasing, or suspending delivery of insulin based on CGM values.” I did not get that read from Medtronic’s site. Which is true? Thank you
That is correct, Judy. When the MiniMed 670G system is used in auto mode, it will automatically adjust basal insulin levels based on your sensor glucose values to target a range of 120 mg/dL.
How much does it cost and when will people from abroad be able to buy this device ? -I live in Palestine- Middle East-
Hi Muhammad. We expect MiniMed 670G system regulatory approval outside the US in the summer, but do not yet know country specifics.
I m interested about a friend of mine that live in Albania.
How can he get this and what will be the cost for him.
I also want to ask if this pomp need any special way to install it?
Hi Bruno. Please have your friend check here for local contacts who would be happy to help him out. http://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/customer-support/international-contacts
What ages is the system approved for? Are teens included?
Hi Frances. The MiniMed 670G system is approved for people with type 1 diabetes ages 14 and older.
Hi, my son uses the 530G. He has been on that for several years. He is due for a new pump in April 2017. My questions are more about usability. We stopped using the Enlite sensors because they were difficult to keep on, and had to calibrate many times per day. We are now trying a competitor CGM. Assuming my son gets the 670G, are the new sensors smaller?, easier to attach and keep on?, provide greater accuracy?, require fewer calibrations? Does the new sensor communicate to a Smart device and can it share BG information to parents, as an example?
Hi Frank. These are all great questions.
The MiniMed 670G system uses our new Guardian Sensor 3 CGM and new Guardian Link 3 transmitter. It is our newest and most advanced glucose sensor with enhanced accuracy and performance, and a longer 7-day life. I’m not sure how often your son was calibrating with the Enlite sensor, but the system does require the user to calibrate the sensor periodically. The MiniMed 670G system is not compatible with MiniMed Connect, as it uses a different radio frequency than the MiniMed 530G system. We will have more information about the new system in the coming weeks.
How can I access the user guide? Or can you tell me what “impaired kidney disease” means (is there a value being looked for)? Sometimes it amazes me of the things that could be used to improve or keep someones complications at bay and a risk is determined to be greater than facing death.
Hi Lynn. You will be able to access the MiniMed 670G system user guide in the spring when the system is available. Impaired kidney function is when the kidneys are not working as they should.
Will the 670G pump have the same insulin bolus delivery options as my current 530G pump, Normal, Square Wave and Dual Wave?
What will be the upgrade path for those of us who got the 530G less then a year before announcement of the 630G? I don’t qualify for reimbursement for the 630G, but is there a stepping stone to get to the 630G and then the 670G?
Hi Edward. We have a variety of different programs that help many customers upgrade to the MiniMed 630G system. They vary by insurance coverage, time since you bought your last pump, etc. Please contact one of our Diabetes Therapy Consultants who will help you explore your upgrade options: 1-800-238-7111.
You can also find more information about upgrading to the MiniMed 630G system here: http://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/minimed-630g-insulin-pump-system#stform, and find more information about our Priority Access program here: https://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/priority-access#details
Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with.
This is great i’ve been type 1 diabetic for 54 yrs, my blood sugar levels drop into the 40’s and 30’s all day when i’m working. I now just suspend my pump every 2 hrs anomy glucose levels stay fine but its getting old.
I’m sorry to hear this, Monty. Please let us know if there’s anything we can do to help.
Now that the sensor is such an integral part of the pump process, do you think Medicare will start including it in coverage? After all, what good is the pump if you can’t afford the sensors?
Thanks,
I’ve been using the Enlite Sensor for several years now and one of the things about it is the frequent ‘Weak Signal’ warnings. Will the Guardian Link 3 transmitter have an improved range when compared to the Enlite?
It’s VERY nice that they’ve gone to a seven day life for the sensor, as the six day was problematic for scheduling.
Thanks!
Neil, the Guardian Sensor 3 is our most advanced glucose sensor with enhanced accuracy and performance. We will have more information on specifics of the sensor/transmitter closer to the spring when the system is available.
I am a type 2 currently on the 530G. It will be out of warranty next October 2017. what model will I upgrade to? Apparently the 670G is only for Type 1’s?
Hi Richard. If you’re interested, you could upgrade to the MiniMed 630G system, which is approved for people with type 2 diabetes. Yes, you are correct in that the MiniMed 670G system is currently only approved for people with type 1 diabetes, ages 14 and older. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
I would like to know when your company expects Medicare to cover this new closed loop system?
Hi Cliff. While I cannot provide you with a timeline, I can tell you we are working with payers to drive broad access to this new technology.
What Glucose Meter will accompany the 670G pump?
Steve – The MiniMed 670G system uses the CONTOUR NEXT LINK 2.4 meter.
How can I purchase It and how much it will cost I don’t have insurance
Hi Ghadeer. We will have more information on cost when it is available in the spring. Stay tuned for more information.
Combining the insertion site with sensor would be a dream.
Ben, assuming you’re referring to combining the infusion site and the sensor site, that would not work for many reasons. First and foremost is that the infusion site needs to be changed much more often than the sensor site (although to my knowledge no one has ever explained why the sensor can be in one place for so long relatively).
Personally, I change my infusion site every two days due to high insulin usage.
I am highly satisfied that they’re going to a seven day sensor, from the current six day, so that it will be much easier to schedule the sensor change.
Hi, what is understand is that – when in Auto Mode, the pump automatically adjusts the delivery of your basal insulin (all that insulin your body needs when you’re not bolusing for food) based on our new, most advanced Guardian® Sensor 3. Auto Mode uses a target of 120 mg/dL and you do still have to enter carbs when you eat and enter blood glucose (BG) readings to calibrate the sensor.
Can you please explain, what it will do, if you forgot to bolus or enter the carbs. For example, if I consume 10gms carb, my blood sugar is supposed to rise and the sensor is supposed to detect the rise in blood sugar. If I don’t enter the carbs, will it not assume that I might be needing more basal insulin because my blood sugar is rising and will it adjust the insulin accordingly?
JK, The Auto Mode feature of the MiniMed 670G system requires you to enter the number of carbs for your meals. Auto Mode will make small adjustments to insulin delivery based on sensor values every five minutes, but the algorithm is not intended to correct for missed meal boluses.
Just so everyone knows, Medtronic wants $3,100 to upgrade to a 630G now to be eligible for a 670G in the Spring. That is even those who were forced out of a Revel Pump when Medtronic “made a business decision” to stop previous sensor production in favor of Enlite sensors. I am told that my warranty is up in 2019 despite not having purchased a pump in about 5 years…when the new pumps were sent out to replace the Revels, warranties were reset. This is a very interesting way to get straight payment from patients and avoid insurance. Sad.
B, I’m sorry you’re frustrated. Each time we introduce something new, we try our best to put together programs to help our current customers access the newest technology, and this is the best we could do at this time.
How much different is the Guardian Link 3 sensor? I currently use the 530 system and was forced to stop exercising with this sensor, because it falls off when you sweat. I have documented the problem with the sensor pad, but have been unable to get anyone at Medtronic to help with it. If they change the sensor pad to match the infusion set pads, they can remedy this problem.
Todd, I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues with the adhesive on the Enlite sensors. We’ve been continuously improving our sensors over the last several months and some of the changes we’ve made have led to better adhesive. You may find these Enlite taping tips helpful, too: https://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/res/img/pdfs/940M11776-013-Additional-Enlite-Tape-Tips.pdf. Please let me know if you’d like me to have someone connect with you to try and help.
The Guardian Sensor 3 is our newest and most advanced glucose sensor with enhanced accuracy and performance, and a longer 7-day life. The adhesive on the sensor though, is still the same as the Enlite sensor.
I have been using Skin Tac adhesive which is the best we could find. I’ve also used every type of tape available. Once the sensor pad comes loose the canula will move and bend resulting in the sensor needing to be replaced. I was hoping the Sensor 3 would be lighter and smaller, then a better pad (like the infusion set pads) will solve the problem.
Todd,
I have had the same problem and used the taping tips. They helped but I’m overweight and sweat a lot, especially during the summer and they wouldn’t stay on. I started using the Smith&Nephew Opsite tape. They are 4 in by 5.5 inches. They completely cover the sensor. I did not have one issue this past summer with the sensor or the tape coming off.
Immense thanks to everyone who worked on this project.
Will it take faster-acting Apidra insulin? I’m rather sick of Actrapid and Humalog in my Medtronic pump, taking about 45mins to start working and then still hanging around, ready to give me a hypo, after 5 hours. I’m hoping to convince my endocrinologist next week to let me try Apidra, in spite of it having no anticoagulant, as I change my site every 2-3 days anyway.
Some comments concern me as I wonder why the people’s endocrinologists don’t make basal adjustments and stuff like that. Surely you wouldn’t spend money on a pump without having an endocrinologist and pump-specialist diabetes educator on board?
Queensland, Australia
Hi Judith. The MiniMed 670G system is indicated for use with the rapid-acting U100 insulins Humalog and NovoLog.
Will Medicare cover the purchase of this device?
Hi Mary. We are currently working with payers to drive broad access for the MiniMed 670G system, and will share more information closer to launch in Spring 2017.
Why is this system not approved for someone with Kidney impairment? What are the issues preventing someone with kidney issues from using this new pump?
Hi Keith. The MiniMed 670G system is not approved for those on dialysis. I encourage you to reach out to your healthcare team on the best therapy options for you.
Hi Sara, thanks for the informative product announcement and all of our replies to the various questions. My 9 year old son was just diagnosed with type 1. Is there an anticipated approval date from the FDA for children younger than 14?
Hi Matt. We are currently sponsoring a clinical study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the MiniMed 670G system in children with type 1 diabetes ages seven to 13. We do not yet have timing on an approval, but will keep the community updated as soon as we do.
I know that with a liver stransplant, they only take part of the liver from the donor to give to the recipient. I also know of surgeons transplanting islet cells from the pancreas into the liver to trick it into making insulin. Is there a way for surgeons to autotranslplant part of the liver into the area that the pancreas, then putting islet cells into that portion of the liver to act as a pancreas? I’m not sure it’s worth it if this new device works or if this has already been tried, just a thought. Any websites I can read articles on this? Thanks.
Dear Sara,
I am an Iranian who is in need of the above mentioned MiniMed® 670G system or MiniMed® 630G system. As this device is not available in Iran, I would like to know how I can provide one of the above mentioned devices. I will appreciate you if provide me with full detail in this regard as well as the price.
looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Regards,
Meisam Rahimianfar
Hi Meisam. The MiniMed 630G system and MiniMed 670G system are currently only approved for use in the US. We do expect MiniMed 670G system regulatory approval outside of the US in Summer 2017, but I cannot speak specifically to Iran. Since we’re the US team, I recommend you reach out to your local team who can help better answer your questions on the device approved for that market. You can find your local contact here: http://bit.ly/1ce3pEc.
Hi Sara, thanks for the informative product announcement and your great engagment with customers. I was wondering how our company could apply for distribution of the MiniMed 670G system in Iran?
Many thanks
Hi Rahman. As I just mentioned to Meisam, the MiniMed 670G system is currently only approved for use in the US. We are expecting product approval outside of the US in Summer 2017, but I cannot yet speak to specific countries.
I have had the meg pump for 2 weeks. Changed by life! I feel so confident about my day. So many times with diabetes/chronic disease you eventually give up. This device is a life changer!
That makes me happy to hear you’re doing well on insulin pump therapy, Matthew! We’re always here if you need anything.
Our son will be 7 by the next spring when it comes to the market. I red somewhere it was recommended for 14 and older. Can this be used also for younger children?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Sinisa. The The MiniMed 670G system is currently only approved for people with type 1 diabetes, ages 14 and older. We are currently sponsoring a clinical study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the MiniMed 670G system in children with type 1 diabetes ages seven to 13, but I do not have timing on that process. I recommend you talk with your son’s healthcare team to determine the best option for him.
I am the father of a daughter with T1D. I am also a retired Pharmacist so I have strong convictions about this topic. My daughter has just been approved for the new Modtronics 670G but not the sensor which must be part of DME . Since she doesn’t have a DME rider on her policy she is not eligible. As I’m sure you agree the hypoglycemic episodes occuring during the day and especially while asleep is a very important part of the operational qualities of this CGM device. Manufacturers and diabetes organizations should strongly voice their opinions on trying to get coverage for the sensors without extra burdensome lifelong costs for patient by adding a DME rider.
Is it available in India? I need one for my 59 year old father . He’s having insulin 2 times a day . And how much for the full device ? How much we need to spend every month for its continuous use ?
Please advice
Hi Praveen. The MiniMed 670G system is currently only approved for use in the US. We expect regulatory approval outside of the US in Summer 2017, but I cannot yet speak to approval in India.
I am on Medicare and Additional Insurance to help cover my Medical needs. I use your Medicare approved insulin pump and I also have the CGM to go with it. Will the The MiniMed® 670G system is the most advanced insulin pump and sensor system designed to help people with type 1 diabetes spend less time worrying about their glucose levels and more time living their lives eventually get approved by Medicare?
Hi Susan. More information on the MiniMed 670G system will be shared in the spring when it’s commercially available. We continue to partner with healthcare providers and work with government insurance providers to provide greater access to people with diabetes.
Totally excited about this for my husband who has been Type 1 for 40 years. The only thing that disappointed me is that we currently use the tubeless pump and we would be going back to a tube in the bed. I wish medtronic would have this bluetooth system that we have loved for the last couple years.
Otherwise – we think this will be a game changer.
I am looking for information on the Priority Access Program. Can you please give details as to what the “approved System Access program. (Restrictions may apply.)” entails? I can’t find any specifics on your website. Thank you.
Hi Diane. As I mentioned to Janeal, the Priority Access program allows customers who are on the MiniMed 630G system to be first in line for the MiniMed 670G system at a lower cost. You can learn more about the program here: http://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/priority-access#details
Hi Sara,
The details on that link are:
** For a limited time until December 31, 2016, your Priority Access program out-of-pocket cost could go as low as $0 if you purchase a MiniMed® 630G system and participate in an approved system access program. Additional terms and restrictions may apply.
What is the access program? What are the additional terms and conditions? Thanks for your help.
Diane, the Priority Access program allows customers on the MiniMed 630G system to be first in line for the MiniMed 670G system at a lower cost. Additional terms and conditions consider the last time your purchased your pump, insurance, etc. I recommend you reach out to our Diabetes Therapy Consultant team to learn more about your specific options: 1-800-238-7111.
Hi Sarah. I’ve been labeled as a very “brittle diabetic” with “insulin resistance” and have battled for over half my life (I’m 48 yes old) with extreme highs and extreme lows. My last a1c was 11.7. My lowest “low” was 15 (my Dr said I shouldn’t have even woken up, this crash happened in the middle of the night. I couldn’t walk, but somehow managed to crawl to the kitchen) and my highs are over 600 (my meter goes to 600 and after that it just says “high”) It’s a daily struggle to try to maintain anything close to normal, healthy blood sugar levels. I crash (low blood sugars) every day, so of course I correct it and then my sugars go high (400’s). I take up to six shots per day due to this yo-yo that is my life. One of my biggest problems is that I do not have health insurance, so being able to afford insulin is very difficult. I usually take Lantus for my long acting and Humalog for my short/ fast acting. But I can’t afford the $444/vial for Lantus, so I’m trying 70/30. It works ok but it’s not something I can change right now. My question: Do you have a program that I might qualify for that I could get this new pump for no cost or at least really super inexpensive? I’m so tired of feeling like garbage every day, struggling each month to come up with the cash for insulin, and would give anything to receive a pump that would make me feel healthy and give me hope of living many many many more years. I am afraid that my time on earth is limited due to my diabetes being out of control, largely based on my inability to afford the insulin that my diabetes responds to the best. Any help from you or if you have information on where I can get financial assistance would be tremendously appreciated. Thank you for your time, Sheila.
Hi Sheila, I’m sorry to hear this. Please email me your contact information at Betweenthelines@medtronic.com, and I will have someone from my team connect with you to discuss your options.
Can you explain what the “approved system access program” is that is required in order to get the upgrade for free? We will be ordering my daughter’s pump on Monday, and will probably go with the 630g if we are able to upgrade for free when the 670g comes out. Any info you can give me on this would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Janeal. The Priority Access program allows customers who are on the MiniMed 630G system to be first in line for the MiniMed 670G system at a lower cost. You can learn more about the program here: http://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/priority-access#details
What kind of security is incorporated. IoT devices have very poor to non existent security and are hackable. Medical devices including diabetic pumps have been shown to be hackable. Has medtronic done anything to upgrade security recently and especially in the minimed 670g?
Keith, just as no network is completely hacker-proof, no medical device is either, but it’s an area where significant progress has been made and one of continued attention. We recognize that device security is an industry wide issue, and we’re committed to customer safety.
Two members of my family have been using pumps with SmartGuard for many years, and both have immediately disabled the auto-suspend because of the screaming alarms which are totally inappropriate for a business setting. Will the new 760 also have these awful alarms before suspending?
Arnold, although I’m not from Medtronic, I am a long-time Medtronic pump user. I upgraded to the Medtronic 630G system 2 months ago. I LOVE this new pump, for the reason you mention! It allows me to put the alarm on VERY VERY soft! I do psychoeducational evaluations with preschool- & elementary-aged students &, when I’m approaching a high or a low, even they cannot hear the alarm, but I can! And they’re VERY distractible students! Another option is to put your pump on “vibrate;” then you know for sure only YOU can know!
Thanks for all the work that has gone into this minimed 670g. Now is it possible to use and get the proper results then our daughter is on dialysis 3 times a week? Thanks, Art
Hi Art. The MiniMed 670G system is not approved for people who are on dialysis. I encourage your daughter to discuss her options with her healthcare team.
My current pump expires on February 11th. I have had it for 4 years. While I have been a Minimed pump user for more than 20 years, I am looking at some of the newer features that are available on other pumps and with other CGM sensors.
Will I be able to get a new 670 in February when my warranty runs out?
Will Medtronic have a buit in function for the data to be sent directly to my mobile device? For all the research I have read, that part seems to be left out on the new 670 information.
Hi Terry, thanks for being part of the Medtronic family for all of these years. You can be one of the first to receive the MiniMed 670G system by taking part in our Priority Access program:https://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/priority-access. The MiniMed 670G system is not compatible with MiniMed Connect, as they operate on different radio frequencies. Hope this helps answer your questions. Let me know if you have any others.
I have 6 boxes of the sensors for my 630g. Will the new CGM 3 be compatible with what I have. And will Medtronic swap box for box?
Hi Victor. Your current Enlite sensors are compatible with the MiniMed 630G system. Please keep in mind that all sensors have a six month shelf life, so some of the boxes may be expired. I understand you get your current supply orders from Edgepark so you may want to reach out to them to see what kind of exchange policy they may have and what they can help you with. If you have any additional questions, please let me know.
I was asking if the sensors are compatible with the NEW CGM FOR THE 670
are the reservoir’s the same with the 670 and the 530
Mike, you can use the same 3 ml reservoirs with the MiniMed 670G system.
Hi Sarah,
I’m just curious about the new transmitter frequencies. Do the new transmitters have less problems, ie “sensor lost” when the sensor is on one side of the body and the pump\receiver is worn on the other side. I’ve been through a few generations of CGMS, and they all have had this issue. And it gets worse as the transmitter battery starts to drop it’s voltage. My local rep said that I just need to get used to wearing my pump as close to the transmitter as possible. Not really an option. I’m hoping that this will be less of an issue when I switch to this pump this year.
Thanks
Hi Michael, which system are you currently using? The MiniMed 670G system uses the Guardian Link 3 transmitter and the MiniMed 630G system uses the Guardian link transmitter, both of which use a different radio frequency than the MiniMed 530G system which uses the MiniLink transmitter. This should increase the communication reliability between the pump and transmitter.
My question is, we would still bolus and be required to wear the sensor? The sensor is not very comfortable to me so I haven’t worn mine but love the new pump options. I have only had my new one for a few years so I’m sure I don’t qualify yet. I am also a brittle diabetic and would benefit from it.
Hi Elaine, which sensor were you previously wearing? We’ve made many advances in the comfort and accuracy of the Enlite sensor, which could improve your experience.
Yes, you still need to bolus on the MiniMed 670G system and wear the Guardian Sensor 3, as the system provides the greatest clinical benefit to people with diabetes when used as a system.
Hi My name is Josh & I am from Sydney Australia – My Pump is almost out of warranty as wall and I am inline to get a 460G next month BUT I want the 670G !!!!
Can I – can I PLEASE get the newer one !!!
XXX Love Minimed pumps for years too !
X Josh
Joshua, the MiniMed 670G system is currently only approved for use in the US. We expect regulatory approval outside the US in summer 2017, but I cannot yet speak to which countries.
Hi Sara,
When will the 670G System be available in Australia I am updating in the next few days.
Cheers,
Vee

I am currently on a Paradigm 523. My warranty is up this month. When will the 630 be available to me? Does it use the same reservoirs? Thank you for your help.
Kirsti, please email me your contact information at betweenthelines@medtronic.com, and I’ll have a member of my team contact you to discuss your upgrade options. You can use the same 3 ml reservoir in the MiniMed 630G system.
hello sara
is this also for Belgium ?
Hi Hamid. Yes same with Beligum. We expect regulatory approval outside of the U.S. in summer 2017, but do not yet know in which countries.
My daughter is 11 will be 12 at the time of launch, does this mean she is not eligible for the 670?
Amy, the MiniMed 670G is approved for use for ages 14 and older. I recommend speaking with your daughter’s healthcare team to determine the best fit for her needs.
I don’t understand how I can trust the new model to make treatment decisions for me…I have had the 630G for 28 days now, and am on my 9th sensor because they keep failing. For example, it woke me up one night telling me my glucose was approaching Suspend on Low range, the screen said I was 73, my finger stick said 200, I checked twice. I tried to use that value to re-calibrate and the pump would not accept it and failed. Told me to replace sensor. The support guy told me it will do that if you try to enter a value far off from what it thinks. He told me NEVER to make a treatment decision based on sensor value. So why should I trust the next model to make treatment decision based on a sensor value that has not proven itself valid to me? Seems easier just to continue poking my finger 7 times a day, if I wake up sweaty, take glucose and go back to sleep. Seems like an awful lot of hassle. One night I had 7 alarms within 1.5 hours. First low, check your glucose. I did, it was 69 so I set a temp basal of zero for 2 hours, ate glucose tabs, went to bed. Minutes later, it beeped that it was going to suspend. Fine, I already set it to zero, shut up. Minutes later, it beeped to tell me my sugar was rising rapidly. Desired effect, I was low and ate glucose. I just don’t understand what the benefit is to me if it is not correct and won’t accept actual values.
Hi Penney, I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues with your sensor and can imagine this would be frustrating. I am going to have one of our team members reach out to you and try and help.
The MiniMed 670G system use the Guardian sensor 3, our newest and most advanced glucose sensor with enhanced accuracy and performance, and a longer 7-day life. It’s the only sensor trusted to power a hybrid closed loop system.
Hi Sara,
I have seen this behavior with the sensors, however, for me, it was only when the sensor was within a day of expiring. I don’t know if this helps with troubleshooting or not, but I figured I’d mention it.
Liz, I have had sensors fail at day one, or three days, some go all 6 days. One morning I went through 3 sensors…one failed within a few hours, when inserting the second one, the site bled like carnage so I removed it and put in a third. Expensive. Luckily, Medtronic replaced them.
I’m sorry Penney, I wasn’t trying to discount your situation. I just wanted to share my case in case that helps with feedback for the MiniMed team.
Sara, you are the third person to tell me that someone from the team was going to “reach out” to me…no one has called me.
yes Penney i have had this problem with my last 2 mini med sensors i use a competitor now but i want the new system to work i cant upgrade till next year anyway but i have had that happen several times with my mini med glucose systems and it is a headache i am told some people it doesn’t work very well for i hope the new system works better for me also.
I had another issue last night with a sensor screaming at me that my blood sugar was 49; it was 114. I tried to re calibrate and it failed. The support guy told me that my interstitial fluid is different when I’m lying down, really?? I don’t think so…. When ever I call with a problem, they try to make it my fault….
Penney, I’m sorry to hear about your experience. I will have a member of my team connect with you to try and help.
Hello Penney. I think I might share my experience with, maybe it can help. I had exactly the same issues as you with the enlite sensor. I could never trust the value from the sensors. I call as well Medtronic and they change them all the time but still was unhappy from the system. One day, I mentioned it to the rep and he took all the time with me to try to solve the problem. Finally, after lots of testing, we concluded that de transmitter was the problem. Even if the testing says it was OK. I changed the transmitter and now the result are more better. Not always perfect, but much better. I am more happy with it now. (sorry if my english in not good :)).
Also, as I am from Canada, I am very disappointed that we will not have this new pomp for years…as the “new” 630G just arrived in april 2017 🙁
Will the Guardian Sensor 3 that comes with the 670G have a shorter needle for insertion? The one on the Enlite Sensor is very uncomfortable during insertion and I always bleed when inserting the Enlite Sensor.
Thanks,
Scott
Hi Scott, I’m sorry to hear you’re finding the Enlite sensor insertion uncomfortable. Please let me know if you’d like me to connect with one of my team members to try and help out.
The Guardian Sensor 3 uses the same needle as the Enlite sensor. However, the Guardian Sensor 3 is more flexible and comfortable to wear because of the removal of the plastic tube, which improves comfort in two ways:
1) The sensor without the tube is more flexible underneath the skin
2) The sensor is 80% smaller in volume
Thank you Sara. I’m looking forward to the new sensor and at that time I will contact support if I’m still having issues with the new sensors.
Regards,
Scott
Hi Sara,
Is this device 670G should work like artificial pancreas. Can you please send it’s specifications?
Shubham, the MiniMed 670G system is a hybrid closed loop system, which has the ability of SmartGuard HCL technology to automatically adjust the delivery of basal insulin based on continuous glucose monitor (CGM) sensor glucose values. You can learn more about the new system here: https://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/minimed-670g-insulin-pump-system
Will there be an improved system for family members to follow the CGM numbers? We’ve been very disappointed in the carelink uploader. We thought there would be an easy-to-use app instead of having to actually sign-in to a carelink account each time you want to check numbers. We’ve been using the medtronic pump since 2008 and the CGM since 2009. Our current pump warranty for the 530G with enlite sensor expires in April, and this is the issue holding us back from committing to medtronic again. Do you know anything about if the 670G system will be improved to easily follow loved ones in real-time on a phone or watch?
Hi Erin. Thanks for your feedback. The MiniMed 670G system is not compatible with MiniMed Connect, as they reside on different radio frequencies. We have heard similar feedback to yours, and are continuing to work on connectivity for other future products.
Please fix this! Other CGMs have great software for tracking and following loved ones, This will be a deal breaker for me and my husband if I can see my realtime blood sugar readings on my apple watch, its so easy to glance down and see where I am at, rather then pull a pump out of my undergarments, lol. Please.
Sara, can the Auto Mode target be adjusted, or is it stuck at 120 mg/dl?
Great question, Jacob. The standard glucose setting in Auto Mode is 120 mg/dL, and the target can also be set temporarily set to 150 mg/dL for exercise and other events.
Hi My name is Erica. I currently have the minimum 5 series. How do I go about getting this new device?
Hi Erica. Please call 1-800-238-7111 to speak to one of our Diabetes Therapy Consultants who will be happy to discuss your upgrade options with you.
Hi Sara-
Will this new pump work have some type of app for my iphone so that my family and I can see real time CGM readings and get alerts for highs and lows? Can I view that technology now? and from what I read earlier the adhesive is still the same but it will somehow stay on for 7 days? I swim daily in the summer with my kids and I had trouble getting it to last 3 days even with messy extra adhesive. I use a different CGM right now that I enjoy but looking to give minimed another try if these things have improved.
Hi Amarylla. The MiniMed 670G system is not compatible with MiniMed Connect, as they work on different radio frequencies. We have heard feedback similar to yours, and are working on connectivity in future products. While the adhesive on the Guardian sensor is the same as the Enlite sensor, the Guardian sensor uses a new, different overtape. We have also made changes to our current Enlite sensor that has lead to better adhesive.
I received a new pump in April 2016 and I’m using the Enlite sensors. Obviously I would not be eligible for a new pump but do the new sensors pair with the ‘older’ (The newest as of less than one year ago, I’m embarrassed to say I don’t even know exactly what pump it is but it’s MMT number 551) pumps? If the new sensors are better than the current sensors I would be very interested in switching to the new sensors. I get five days out of mine, my insurance only covers 50% and my accuracy is less than perfect. I do love everything about the pump, medtronic as a company, Metronic’s customer service & your drive to be the first and foremost in the best control but I am unable to use the whole system although I very much look forward to a more accurate sensor and would hope that it would pair with a pump that I bought less than one year ago. Thanks for any info you can give!
Hi Robin. Our new Guardian Sensor 3 can only be used with the MiniMed 670G. If you’d like to discuss your upgrade options, please email me your contact information at betweenthelines@medtronic.com, and I’ll have someone get in touch with you.
could you tell me the price of the 670g pump
Hi Susan, the price varies depending on your insurance coverage, when you last bought your pump, etc. Please send me your contact information at betweenthelines@medtronic.com, and I’ll have someone from my team connect with you.
i am waiting to be able to get this system i have the 530g and my mini med is not upgrade able till next October which i cant wait to get the 670 i have had diabetes for over 40 years and been on a pump for over 20 years i also have low bs unawareness and have two children who i love to death i had an accident about 4 years ago and both of my girls were in the truck with me thank god we are all ok but i have never had that happen in over 40 years of being a type 1 diabetic let me tell you seeing this closed loop system is so exciting for me like a bionic pancreas which i hope to see a cure in my life span but this is so close to it cant wait to get my next mini-med pump wish i could get it sooner but with my insurance and the coverage i have to wait i am disabled for having low bs unawareness so i only go out on my own to get my girls from school and if my bs allows food shopping but i get by and pray i never go through that type of accident again.
That sounds like a scary experience, Kris. I’m glad you’re all okay! October will be here before you know it. 🙂 Let us know if you ever need anything, we’re always here to help.
Do you still have to be connected to the tube?
Yes, the MiniMed 670G is not tubeless.
Can you please tell me how the 670G treats lows? Does it only adjust the basal rate, or has there been a way developed to inject a small amount of a glucagon type drug?
Hi L.M. The MiniMed 670G system does not treat lows, but when used in Auto Mode, automatically adjusts your basal insulin levels based on your sensor glucose values and recent delivery needs, using a target of 120 mg/dL.The SmartGuard HCL technology in the MiniMed 670G system also has Suspend before low and Suspend on low. Suspend before low stops insulin delivery before the low limit is reached, and automatically resumes insulin delivery when sensor glucose levels recover.
The 670G system sounds wonderful and I would love to use it, but I have the following problem. I’ve used the 530G system with Enlite blood glucose sensors for several years. I’m a physician who has recently retired from my university professorship after 40 years of service (and 62 years of T1D). My insurance has now switched from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) primary, Medicare secondary to Medicare primary, BCBSM (continuing my university’s plan, but with all of the premiums paid by me) secondary. Previously, BCBSM paid directly to Medtronic for my pump, sensors and other supplies. Now, however, BCBSM only supplements whatever Mediccare supports, but doesn’t pay completely. They pay (to CCS Medical, not to Medtronic), for pump supplies, tubing, reservoirs, etc. Therefore, although my out-of-pocket medical insurance costs are very substantially greater since retirement, what I’m getting in return is much less, and I must pay full cost for the Enlite sensors for my 530G. In any case, if I switch to the 670G system, will this system be supported, all or in part, by my current insurance, or will I be faced with huge out-of-pocket costs, both initially and (for recurrent supplies and sensors) chronically?
I would very much appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.
Hi, my name is Gina, I have been a diabetic for 43 years. I have been on a pump for 18 years. i have always been on a medtronic pump. My pumps warranty has ended. I am interested in getting the new 670G. Please send me some information about this new pump system.
Hi Gina. I will have a member of my team reach out to you to discuss the new system and your options. In the meantime, you can learn more about the MinIMed 670G system here: https://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/minimed-670g-insulin-pump-system
We took minimed 630 to our daughter to get the new 670g asap. How can I make sure we will get priority access and new pump ASAP? Is someone going to contact doctor’s office?
Hi Sari. If your daughter is on the MiniMed 630G system, she is automatically enrolled in the Priority Access program. In the coming weeks, you’ll receive a text message and email from us when it’s time to order your daughter’s MiniMed 670G system. Once we receive her prescription from her doctor and verify insurance coverage, we will ship her new system to her.
I signed up for the new 630 only 2 days after it was released. I assumed I was on the priority access program… which I am. However, I would have thought I would have been eligible to participate in the customer program as an initial user and that’s not the case because my provider wasn’t chosen. Had I been told this, I would have switched providers. Now I’m out of luck. 🙁
Hello I was wondering about the size dimensions of the MiniMed 670G system. Can you give any information about this? Thank you for your time.
Hi Erica. The MiniMed 670G system dimensions are 2.1”W x 3.78”H x 0.96”D.
Thanks so much for the quick reply! I am considering this insulin pump once my warranty runs out on mine.
My son is on the 630G pump since Oct/Nov 2016, and due for another order of sensors. But being that we’re on the priority access, I’m wondering if it’s worth ordering a new set some of which may go unused, or just to wait for the new pump. If we do order sensors for the 630G, will Medtronic swap unused, unopened sensors for the 630G with ones for the 670G?
Hi Franz. You’re able to send up to two unused and unopened boxes of Enlite sensors from your most recent supply order in exchange for Guardian Sensor 3.
Sara, this sounds promising. I’m currently a 530G CGM user and have enjoyed the control it’s provided. I would like to get more information about this system to review with my doctor; furthermore, I would like to know the cost to get into this system and what it will cost every 3 months to continue to use it.
Hi Victor. Please send me your contact information to betweenthelines@medtronic.com, and I’ll have someone reach out to you to discuss your upgrade options.
Sara, I have been a Type One for 71 years with no complications!! Must be doing something called a “miracle.” I have had a Medtronic pump for 17 years – currently a 523 which I have been told by my local representative I am eligible for a reconditioned 523 in June. I am a brittle diabetic and have many Lows and Highs. It seems my only answer is a CGM which Medtronic has been unable to supply to me under Medicare – but now can supply the 670G using Medicare support. I am 85 and wondering if I will ever see a 670G attached to me for better control?? Can you give me any hope for my future with Medtronic?
Hi Raymond. Please email me your contact information at betweenthelines@medtronic.com, and I’ll have a team member reach out to you to discuss your options.
Can the 670g be used by itself without the sensor?
Melody, the MiniMed 670G is intended to be used as a system.
I wonna order the 670g whole system
the pump the CGM device and the sensor
how I can do that ?
Wissam, are you currently on the MiniMed 630G system?
No I’m not
I wonna start my pump treatment
I’m diabetic sine 10 years
So I thought insulin pump woul be better since i take too many shots
I looked the 630 system then saw the 670 so the 670 is much better so i wonna look for the 670 G system
How can i order it along with its stuff and the sensor ?
Wissam, you can be first in line for the MiniMed 670G system through our Priority Access program: https://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/minimed-670g-insulin-pump-system. If you’d like me to connect you with someone to discuss your options, email me your contact information at betweenthelines@medtronic.com.
I sent my personal information please reply me as soon as possible

Hi Sherry. You will receive a text and email when it is time to place your MiniMed 670G system order. We are looking at June for timing.
how can i find out if i can grade my current medtronic insulin pump to this new model?
Hi Shireena. Please email me your contact information at betweenthelines@medtronic.com, and I’ll have a team member reach out to you to discuss your upgrade options.
Hello, my daughter is on Medicare, how do I find out when medicare will pay for a new pump? and will they pay for the 670G just like any other pump?
Kurt, at this time Medicare doesn’t cover the MiniMed 670G system. However, we continue to partner with healthcare providers and work with government insurance providers to provide greater access to people with diabetes.
What is it’s price and when it will be available?
Riz, the price is comparable to our other insulin pump systems, and will vary depending on your insurance plan, the last time you bought your pump, etc. We will start taking orders for Priority Access customers in June, and expect availability to all other customers in late summer/early fall.
Good monrning i purchased the 630g to have access to the 670g now when it comes out in june im i supposed to keep calling or will i be email or phone call and if i dont call will i just be by past.? Question is how will i find out when its out before i get left behind.? And yes im in the early access program.
Gerard, you will receive an email and text when it is time to place your MiniMed 670G system order.
Hi Sara,
I purchased the MiniMed 630G in March 2017. How do I know if I’m part of the Priority Access Program and if I am, when I’ll hear about upgrading to the new MiniMed 670G? Also, what will the cost be for upgrading to the new system?
Hi Robin. I checked with our team, and you ARE opted in. You’ll receive a text and email when it’s time to place your order.
Hi Sara
Reading your comments I feel the 670G might not come to India very soon. Its FDA approval in the US has brought so much hope for all T1 sufferers…now just waiting for its availability in India. Can we hope that it’ll be available to us in India soon?
Hi Sabina. Medtronic is currently working alongside regulatory bodies outside of the U.S. to make the MiniMed 670G system commercially available across the world. Approval timelines are subject to the regulatory process of individual countries and regions. The commercial launch plans within these regions will be determined closer to approval dates and subsequent communications will be distributed.
My daughter got her 630g in October. Where is the line at the moment to get 670g? We haven’t heard from Medtronic yet.
Hi Sari. Medtronic is now onboarding those enrolled in the Priority Access Program who signed up to be first in line to receive the system upon commercial launch. This month we will begin fulfilling orders and shipping our MiniMed 670G systems to customers in our Priority Access group. Please look out for an email from us very soon with important next steps on how to place your MiniMed 670G order.
Hi Sara
I started pump and cgm on March just gone on the 640 g which has bein a lifechanger.
Is this new 670 g available to upgrade to for That price?? If so is it available on australia yet?
Hi Michael. Great to hear your positive experience with the MiniMed 640G system. To answer your questions, Medtronic is currently working alongside regulatory bodies outside of the U.S. to make the MiniMed 670G system commercially available across the world. Approval timelines are subject to the regulatory process of individual countries and regions. The commercial launch plans within these regions will be determined closer to approval dates and subsequent communications will be distributed.
For those who live in usa with low income and no insurance.
Is there any help or 20-30% off they can get ?
Wissam,
We offer financial assistance to those who qualify, which you can learn more about here http://bit.ly/180ygiz. Please let us know if you have any other questions or would like to be connected with a team member to learn about your options.

Yes please if u can connect me with an advisor
Hi, what is the best way to check out the status of the 670g order? We got for our daughter 630g in October, I already paid $299 and I would like to know when we will receive the new pump.We are frustrated with 630g. We have too many alarm, especially during a night and we think with 670g we can get rid of the most of the alarms and we all can finally sleep.
Sari, we are working as quickly as we can to take and fill orders for those who participated in the Priority Access Program. You will receive a text message and email from Medtronic when it’s time to place your order. Your new system will be shipped once we receive your prescription from your doctor and verify insurance coverage. I am sorry you are having issues with the alarm on your daughter’s MiniMed 630G System. Please note that the system’s alarm volume is adjustable and features customizable alerts that can be changed throughout the day based on individual needs, The alarms also have loud and discreet options (volume ranges from vibrate only to twice as loud as previous Medtronic insulin delivery systems). If you continue to have issues with the alarms, please email your phone number and email address to betweenthelines@medtronic.com and I will be happy to connect you with someone on the 24-Hour HelpLine.
Hi, I am Mohammad and I live in Iran. I am currently using the MiniMed 508 Insulin pump and I want to change it to 670G.what should I do?
Mohammad,
Medtronic is currently working alongside regulatory bodies outside of the U.S. to make the MiniMed 670G system commercially available across the world. Approval timelines are subject to the regulatory process of individual countries and regions. Thank you!

Hi I am currently using a 620G pump which the warrantee is expiring the end of this year and I look forward to upgrading to the 670G and taking advantage of meeting my insurance deductible, but have a few questions
How is the sensor3 range compared to the sensor on the 620? I find that the signal cannot travel through my body if pump and sensor are not in a direct line of sight.
Which meter and test strips does the 670 use? I have to get an authorization for my insurance annually for the contour next strips.
Finally what should I do with all my old pumps? this will be my 4th pump and I only need one as a back up. would like to get some cash value back on them if at all possible.
Hi Mike. Do you reside in the U.S. or are you elsewhere? The MiniMed 670G system is only available in the U.S. at this time. If you do reside in the U.S., you can email dhelp@medtronic.com and provide them your name and contact information; someone from the Customer Service Center will then reach out to you. If you reside elsewhere, please let me know where so I can provide you the proper contact information for the local Medtronic team.
So when will be the release date ?
I am being told Anthem blue cross is deciding not to cover my 670g…..Is there anything I can do? I was really looking forward to receiving my new pump. I did follow the link on your site to contact them letting anthem know why I need the pump, All I got was an automated reply saying that we should not be emailing them at the address provided. i am so disappointed.
Hi Daniel. I’m sorry to hear that. Anthem has a non-coverage stance that considers the MiniMed 670G system investigational and not medically necessary. With this investigational status, there is a risk reimbursement can be denied for ongoing supplies. We encourage you to talk to your physician and/or contact your insurance company to discuss your coverage situation and/or address your ongoing supply coverage concerns. If you want to pursue coverage, we have a toolkit to get you started: http://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/670GCoverageToolkit
Can i use the sensors for my 630G pump or the sensors are going to be different.
Hi Celesta. No, the MiniMed 670G system includes the new Guardian Sensor 3. This is a new CGM sensor and is the first and only sensor approved by the FDA to power a hybrid closed loop system. However, you’re able to send up to two unused and unopened boxes of Enlite sensors from your most recent supply order in exchange for Guardian Sensor 3.
Why was my comment deleted???
Hi Daniel. We are committed to reviewing and publishing comments as quickly as possible. For more details see our comment policy: https://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/blog/comment-policy/
With this new device, will I have the ability to check my daughters Blood Sugars through my android phone?
Hi Shawn. The MiniMed 670G system does not include this feature. If you’re interested in the connectivity benefits of MiniMed Connect and its remote monitoring features, we recommend the MiniMed 530G system.
Does florida blue Medicare advantage cover this?
Hi Paul. I can have a member of the team reach out to you to explore your options if you send me your contact information.
is the 670G pump itself water proof? if not is there a case out there for this pump that is water proof?
Hi Seth. Yes, the MiniMed 670G system is waterproof.
Do you know if there are going to make a swivel clip for the 670g.?
Do you know if there are going to make a swivel clip for the 670g.???
Do you know if there are going to make a swivel clip for the 670g.??? Yes i already ask that but never got any reponse from anyone.
What is the wait time for this new pump? Have all the pre-orders been filled, so it’s readily available? I’ve used Medtronic for years, and the new one has been receiving raves from my endo providers. I’ve been diabetic 56 years, and counting, so want to use the best there is to keep on going!
Hi Candice. We’re currently shipping out our Priority Access orders and anticipate that will be through early fall. You can find more information about new orders here: https://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/device-upgrading
I currently use 530G with the MySentry and the phone app that links to carelink. Does this one let me continue to use these tools?
Hi Carrie. At this time, the mySentry remote monitoring device is discontinued and not compatible with the MiniMed 670G system because they reside on incompatible radio frequencies. We are committed to providing these types of solutions to customers and are currently exploring viable alternatives.
Is the limited availability period over? I’m a little miffed that as an older user of the Medtronic pump I did not have the opportunity to take part in the trial and early adopters program. Be that as it may, in an effort to keep my sugar count at a reasonable level (i.e. between 80 – 150) I continue to experience way to many lows, one of which caused me to crash my car. fortunately, it was a single car accident and I escaped unscathed. Just met with my endocrinologist and he was pushing your new system. What is the cost, what is the availability and how long does it take to fill an order?
Hi Eric. I’m sorry to hear about your accident. The Priority Access program ended on April 28, 2017 but was available to those that signed up. We’re currently shipping out orders and anticipate that will be through early fall. You can find more information about new orders here: https://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/device-upgrading. If you prefer to speak to someone, please e-mail us your contact information and we’ll have someone reach out.
Hi,
I need to purchase 670 G out of pocket, since my insurance does not pay for it. How much is the yearly cost if I am paying it myself.
–Thanks,
Max
Hi Max. Please email dhelp@medtronic.com your contact information and I’ll connect you with someone to help answer your question. If you need assistance with your out-of-pocket cost, Medtronic offers flexible payment options and a financial assistance program for qualifying customers.
Good Evening,
I have received my 670 pump and love the system! I have misplaced the email sent to me regarding the links I am to fill out to cancel the $299. Would someone send my that email again or contact me for further information?
Thanks,
Josh
Hi Josh. I have forwarded your request to our Customer Service team. You should be contacted by our team via e-mail within 24-48 hours.
I just upgraded to the 630G on a priority access program, is there anyway to upgrade to the 670G
Hi Ryan. Yes, if you purchased the MiniMed 630G system, you’ll be one of the first in line to get the opportunity to upgrade to the new system. Please e-mail dhelp@medtronic.com your contact information or visit for more information http://bit.ly/2iKirK9
I received my Medtronic 670G pump and the Guardian 3 sensor first part of August and I’ve been in Automode for a month now. This is life changing for me, I’ve never been able to get my blood sugars in the normal range and now they stay there. I’ve been a Type 1 diabetic for 33 years and if I had this pump 20 years ago I might still have all the feeling in my feet. In the first month I have gone from 91% of my BS over 180 to 8% over 180 and I’ve also lost 8 pounds in the first month. My doctors are calling me there “miracle patient”. Thanks so much Medtronic!
My doctor and I talked about moving to the 670 but I still have a year left on my warranty from my current pump. I’ve changed jobs and have new insurance. The rep said I have to wait till my pump is out of warranty before my new insurance company would pay for it. Why offer a program where I can upgrade my pump but yet I can’t?
Hi Tom. Our Pathway program allows you to upgrade while you are still in warranty. Through this program you can upgrade to newest technology, but since we are unable to use your insurance, there is an out-of-pocket cost. If you would like to learn more about this program, please contact our device specialist at 800.646.4633 option #3.
Does anyone have any idea when the Guardian 3 will be available to ship? I just got my 670G but its just another pump until I get the closed loop function in place. No website says when, my health supplies store doesn’t know……Medtronic…..can you help us out? THANKS!!!!
Hi Carl. I am sorry for any confusion. We anticipate CGM orders going out in early 2018. We are working as quickly as possible to fulfill orders for customers enrolled in our Priority Access program and once that is complete, orders for our new and upgrade customers can begin shipping.
Hello , is the 670G pump released, and how can i buy it .?
Hi Sam. Where do you currently live?
I live in canton michigan in usa.
I am wondering when I will receive my CGM? I received my 630g pump in July and was told the CGM would ship in October?
Hi John. I looked into your account and you have a MiniMed 670G pump. Your transmitter order is pending and will be shipped out once all other transmitters have been shipped to Priority Access customers.
I just ordered a 670G. How do I become a Priority Access Customer as my deductibles for the year have been met and will reset 01/01/18?
Hi David. Unfortunately, our Priority Access program has ended. If you’ve ordered a 670G system recently, we expect to ship your pump by the end of October provided we’ve received your prescription from your doctor and verify insurance coverage. However, due to increased global demand, we are experiencing constraints to CGM supply. If you would like to speak with someone about your specific account, please call our Customer Support Center for further information.

do you ship worldwide? if yes i cant seem to find the pump its self in the website
Hi Mohammaed. Yes, we do ship worldwide. However, the MiniMed 670G system is only approved and available in the U.S. at the moment.
Is there any word on whether medicare will cover the 670g system?
Hi Paul. I do not have a timeline on when Medicare will provide CGM coverage (part of the MiniMed 670G system), but we are actively working with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services to establish coverage consistent with other healthcare insurance companies.
What can we, as users, do to help convince Medicare to cover the CGM sensors?
Great question, Ben. Check out our blog post here http://bit.ly/1LvQHlG to learn how you can make a difference. In the meantime, also work with your healthcare team, so they can help advocate for CGM coverage on your behalf.
Hi, I am interested in upgrading from my 530g to 670 pump. My 4 years ownership ends on 1/14/2018. When should I order a new pump? Will my doctor have to write a new prescription? How do I use up my old supplies before starting my new? Can I retain my old pump until all the supplies are used up before returning it? I am looking forward to the new generation sensor. Current sensor has great variability. I have been a Type 1 for almost 55 years and find that scar tissue in my stomach area makes finding good sensor and infusion sites more difficult.
Hi Richard. Please contact one of our device specialists to get upgrade information for the MiniMed 670G system at 800.646.4633 option #3 or visit the following link: https://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/minimed-670g-insulin-pump-system.
In October 2016, I had a severe DKA event while on vacation in Miami, getting ready to go on a cruise w/ my husband and grandsons. My pump started malfunctioning, and I had realized the insulin was dripping out of my infusion set. I changed in 4 times to no avail. For the first time ever, I forgot my back up pens. We called Walgreens to get some, and they were closed. Instead of finding a 24 hr Walgreens, I said we’ll get them in the morning. Morning came, and I was very sick and glucose near 600. People who do not know this should…with your decline from DKA and extremely high glucose, you become so sick, you get confused. I thought I had the flu. I never called Walgreens, bc I was so out of it, I didn’t remember nor care. My husband had never heard of DKA. He thought it was the flu also. I vomited so violently, I tore my esophagus. I got to where I couldn’t walk w/o my husband holding me up.
The next morning, I was super out of it. My husband couldn’t figure out how to take my glucose. I wasn’t capable. Soon he said, we need to get on the cruise ship. I stated I wasn’t going anywhere, and a few minutes later, I started talking to my deceased mother. At that point he realized I needed help. But he still thought it was a bad virus, bc he was never told about DKA. He couldn’t get through to 911, bc his phone wasn’t in the “roaming” mode. A security guard came up when he called the front desk asking how to call 911. When she saw me, she contacted them immediately. At this point I was unconscious, so I don’t remember anything.
My husband said when the paramedics came, the head guy said, “She’s going in”. They took my glucose and went into rush mode. They got me in the ambulance and sped away, leaving my husband w/ no car, 7 pieces of luggage, no hotel reservations, and 2 grandsons.Thankfully, my daughter travels w/ her job, so she was contacting Uber, car rentals, and hotels.
My husband said I was in ER when he got there and was completely unconscious. He realized I might die, but the drs never told him that until later. I was admitted to ICU and unconscious for days. I remember nothing except hearing someone saying Kelly, are you still w/ us?” I don’t know who, when, or where.
When I woke, I ddn’t know why I was in the hospital hooked up to machines and IV’s. I was told my glucose was in the 1000 range, had a heart attack, kidneys failure, and other organs were shutting down. I cried but fell back to sleep. After a few more days, everyone was saying how lucky I was to have lived. They told my husband I was going to live, and he was shocked. he didn’t know what was going on and confused. They had to explain it all to him.
My diabetes team got me guided to be in the priority group to get on the 670G system. I got it over the summer. After being on it 3 months, I went into my St. Louis doctor’s office and the people in there from Medtronic and Barnes hospital about fell out of their chairs when they read my glucose reading graph. They had never seen this kind of control w/ my diabetes since being diagnosed in 2007. I was always in the 300-400’s. Even if I didn’t eat, my glucose rose. My readings were mostly under 200.
We are all convinced that this ump and sensor will save my life. With it, what happened in Miami never would have happened. Sometimes I cannot feel my lows until I’m in the lower 40’s or 30’s. I just don’t feel it anymore. Now, when I fall to 70, it alerts me that hypoglycemia is coming on. When I get over 200, the same thing. And it will keep reminding you until it knows you’re treating it. It shuts off basal when I’m falling. It gives me insulin when I’m getting high. But because I get high even if not eating, I can see where I am getting little shots of insulin all the tin.
Anyone w/ bad to severe diabetes MUST get this pump and sensor. IT WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!!!AND, be sure your family and friends are taught the symptoms!
Hi Deborrah. Please e-mail dhelp@medtronic.com your contact information so that we may update you on the status of your upgrade.
